How to Choose Between Set Pieces and Individual Gear in Legend of Ymir?
Gear in Legend of Ymir comes in three types. Grim is for PvE, Steel is for PvP, and Moon covers both. But that is only the first step. The real question that separates average builds from optimized ones is whether you should chase full set bonuses or invest in individual pieces. After the May 2026 update, two new armor sets with set effects were introduced: the Rare-tier Gullveig set and the Epic-tier Heid set. Each has five pieces, with set bonuses unlocking at 3 pieces and 5 pieces. When enhancement materials are limited, the choice between pushing a single piece to a higher level versus completing a set directly impacts your damage output. This article breaks down the decision from three angles: analyzing the new set effects, prioritizing individual piece enhancements, and planning your mix-and-match strategy for each stage of progression.

What Each of the Two New Sets Actually Gives You
Gullveig and Heid each consist of five pieces. Set bonuses activate at 3 pieces and 5 pieces only. Equipping 2 or 4 pieces gives no extra benefit.
- Gullveig (Rare) is built for monster farming and loot. The 3-piece bonus grants +11% monster damage. The 5-piece bonus adds +11% monster damage defense and +10% item drop rate, with an active skill that provides status immunity and +15% all damage defense.
- Heid (Epic) is built for PvP. The 3-piece bonus grants +200 fixed PvP damage and +30 accuracy. The 5-piece bonus adds +200 fixed PvP damage defense and +30 evasion, with an active skill that provides status immunity and +40% all damage defense.
- Both sets share the same cooldown structure. The active skill has a 90-second cooldown with a 30-second duration, and the knockdown-triggered passive has a 60-second cooldown. The set effects are burst-oriented rather than permanent. If you cannot capitalize within that 30-second window, the set bonus delivers little value.
Both Gullveig and Heid revolve around that 30-second active skill window. Choose based on whether you primarily farm monsters or fight players. Neither set excels at both.
The Enhancement Priority Order for Individual Pieces Cannot Be Skipped
When going the individual piece route, the order in which you allocate resources directly determines whether your combat power keeps pace.
- Accessories come first. At +9, each necklace, bracelet, and ring provides 7% skill damage. At +10, this rises to 10% per piece, giving a total of 30% across all three. This bonus applies fully in both PvE and PvP. It is the highest single-point return in the individual piece path.
- Weapons and sub-weapons come second. The goal is +12, securing the full suite of direct attack and penetration stats. The enhancement benefit is felt in every single hit. Weapons rank just below accessories only because the skill damage from accessories has broader coverage.
- Armor pieces come last. Helmet, chest, pants, gloves, and shoes only need +7 to start. Push further only when materials are plentiful. The defensive stats per enhancement level are less impactful than the offensive gains from weapons and accessories. Dumping limited enhancement stones into armor early on offers the worst return on investment.
The rule is simple: offense first, defense follows. Accessories at +10 represent the single largest return in the individual piece path. Do not chase higher armor levels before hitting that benchmark.

Mixing Sets and Individual Pieces at Different Stages
Depending on your account's progress and available resources, the set-versus-pieces decision breaks down into three stages.
- Early stage: prioritize individual piece enhancement. The goal here is to fill every slot with blue-quality gear and push your weapon and accessory levels up as quickly as possible. Do not worry about set bonuses yet. Low-quality sets have weak base stats. Applying a percentage-based set bonus on top of a thin foundation yields far less value than simply raising your weapon enhancement by two more levels.
- Mid stage: aim for a 3+2 hybrid. If you have three Heid pieces, take the 3-piece bonus it offers, then fill the remaining two slots with well-enhanced, high-quality individual pieces. This setup often outperforms forcing a full 5-piece set that includes one or two low-enhancement dead-weight pieces.
- Late stage: push for the full 5-piece set and its active skill. This is only worth doing once your armor pieces are all at +7 or above and your enchantments are properly set up. The set's active skill is amplified by your base stats. If the foundation is not solid, popping the skill will not create a meaningful spike.
The core principle: individual pieces build the foundation; set bonuses are the finishing touch. Never force a 5-piece set with underleveled armor. You end up abandoning the benefits of both paths at once.
Enchantment Direction and Seal Choice Are Easy to Get Wrong
When mixing individual pieces, enchantment direction often matters more than the equipment grade itself. For weapons and sub-weapons, prioritize skill damage and physical damage. These two stats are the most stable and the least susceptible to being diluted by enemy defenses. The same applies to accessories: 30% skill damage from three +10 pieces, paired with the correct enchantment modifiers, creates a meaningful output gap. For the Blazon system, stack skill damage, smash damage, PvP attack, and PvP penetration. Align all four toward offense. For seals, go straight for the Seal of Victory. Its skill damage and skill defense are straightforward and effective. The Seal of Blessing offers crit rate and crit resistance values that are too low to compete. If your enchantment direction goes wrong, even a fully enhanced piece can lose over 20% of its potential damage output.
In Legend of Ymir's gear system, set pieces and individual pieces are not an either-or choice. They are two ways of allocating the same resource pool. Individual piece enhancement sets the floor of your combat power; set effects determine your ceiling within that critical 30-second burst window. For most players, the most efficient route in the current version is: push accessories to +10 and weapons to +12 first, then chase the 3-piece set that matches your main content focus, and only complete the 5-piece set when conditions are fully mature. Beyond gear, the Valkyrie system, Disir Codices, Collections, Potential allocation, and passive skill books all act as multipliers on your base stats. Set pieces and individual gear are just one piece of the full combat puzzle. Do not forget to leave resources for the other systems.
