The Ultimate Fallout 76 Infestation Build Guide

Oct 14, 2026
Share: WhatsAppReddit

Infestations is a major free update for Fallout 76, released in June 2026 alongside Patch 68 and Season 25, Appalachia Under Siege. After the update, hostile factions such as the Blood Eagles, Cultists, and Super Mutants seize locations across Appalachia. Once you clear an area, you must defeat an elite boss for a chance at four-star legendary gear. Infestation bosses carry high damage reduction and cannot be crippled, so builds that lean on limb damage or short bursts rarely reach their full potential. To clear these fights efficiently, favor physical damage, armor penetration, and sustained output, and adjust your weapon, Perk cards, and defenses to the boss's mutation.

The Ultimate Fallout 76 Infestation Build Guide

How Infestation Bosses Fight

Community testing puts a single Infestation boss at roughly 16,000 hit points with about 70% global damage reduction, and the boss takes no radiation or poison damage. The boss can also roll a Daily Ops-style mutation, including Agile, Reflective, Cloaking, Savage, Freezing, and Resilient. Each mutation shifts the pace of the fight and asks you to adjust your approach. A boss's limbs cannot be crippled, so shotgun, rifle, and revolver setups built on breaking body parts lose much of their edge. Elemental damage also runs into the boss's resistances, which makes physical damage, armor penetration, and steady output the core of a strong setup. Before entering a fight, check the boss's mutation and stock up on healing items, ammunition, and repair materials so you do not have to stop mid-clear for broken gear.

Melee Builds: Physical Damage and Survivability First

Melee is one of the builds the community recommends for Infestation bosses. Its advantage is a high single-hit damage ceiling, low ammunition cost, and steady output through armor penetration. For weapons, the Ogua Gauntlet suits a defensive setup built around blocking, while Grognak's Axe fits a two-handed build aimed at higher per-hit damage. Perk cards follow your weapon type and play style. Incisor lowers target armor and raises the effective damage of melee attacks; Hack and Slash adds area damage to melee VATS attacks; and Taking One for the Team makes enemies take more damage after they strike you. Keep the core damage Perks first, then adjust the rest to your character level and survival needs. Against the grenades thrown by Cultists and the boss's close-range attacks, watch enemy movement and use repositioning, blocking, and healing to stay in the fight. If the boss rolls Freezing or Reflective, ease off the attack rhythm to avoid losses from sustained aggression.

Other Weapon Setups and Where They Fit

Beyond melee, stealth rifles, bows, Vampire heavy weapons, and launchers all work for Infestation challenges. Each setup differs in reach, ammunition cost, and survivability, so pick the one that matches the gear you already have.

Stealth rifles and bows: a semi-auto Handmade hits hard per shot, and Follow Through raises the damage that follows a sneak attack. Bows suit players who manage ammunition carefully, but against bosses that resist crippling and carry heavy damage reduction, watch the actual output.

Vampire heavy weapons: the Vampire's Ultracite Gatling Laser sustains your health through its healing effect and fits long, drawn-out fights. Its real staying power depends on the weapon's effects, attack rate, and your build, and you still need to watch ammunition and equipment condition.

Launchers: Grand Finale delivers area damage and works well against grouped enemies. The Two Shot effect tunes its output further, but against high-reduction bosses, base your choice on actual hit damage and ammunition cost.

When clearing several areas back to back, slot durability Perks to ease the repair burden from weapon wear. Choose weapons by weighing per-shot damage, fire rate, and how hard ammunition is to come by, rather than chasing a high fire rate that drains ammunition too fast.

The Exclusive Four-Star Legendary Mods

Infestation bosses drop five exclusive four-star legendary mods, each suited to a different weapon or armor setup.

Tarnished (weapon): the lower the weapon's condition, the higher the damage, with community records pegging the maximum bonus at about 120%. Using it means weighing the damage gain against the risk of the weapon breaking.

Satiated (weapon): kills restore your hunger and thirst; ghoul characters recover their Feral meter instead. It suits builds that care about keeping resources topped up.

Raging (armor/power armor): gain 3% damage for 10 seconds when struck, and the duration refreshes on each hit.

Hauler's (armor/power armor): +30 carry weight, useful for characters hauling large amounts of ammunition, healing items, and loot.

Vector (armor/power armor): +10% VATS hit chance against distant targets, suited to ranged VATS setups.

When choosing four-star mods, weigh your main weapon, combat habits, and gear needs. Players chasing sustained output should focus on weapon damage effects, while those who carry a lot of supplies can lean on the carry weight bonus. Since the exact values and conditions of legendary effects can shift between versions, check the in-game description before acquiring or equipping them.

Infestation challenges reward sustained output, resource management, and adaptability more than peak burst damage. Melee, Vampire heavy weapons, and several ranged setups are all viable, and each should be tuned to the boss's mutation, your weapon effects, and your Perk cards. Figures here on boss hit points, damage reduction, four-star mod effects, and drop rules come from community testing and player records and do not represent fixed values across every version. During a challenge, rely on the current in-game enemy stats, equipment descriptions, and actual combat results, and set up your weapons, armor, healing items, and repair supplies to clear Infestation areas more efficiently.
