How to Get Fallout 76's New Weapon
The Pipe is a four-star legendary pistol in Fallout 76, introduced with the Gleaming Depths update. It is built on the pipe pistol platform and tied to the classic "Pipe is Life" Easter egg. The Pipe does not belong to the regular drop pool, and no vendor or exchange offers it; the only known route runs through the Strange Pipe random encounter. The sections below cover the weapon's ammo and mods, its unique effect, and the full acquisition process.

Ammo, Levels, and Mods
The Pipe is built on the pipe pistol platform and spans levels 1 through 50. It fires .38 rounds by default, and a receiver mod converts it to .45 or Ultracite .38. The weapon supports 75 mods across 6 slots, covering the receiver, barrel, grip, stock, magazine, sight, and muzzle. Adding a stock turns The Pipe into a rifle, which shifts its perk bonuses from the pistol category to the rifle category. At level 50, the base damage in the weapon database reads about 66, and the final number varies with mods and perks.
The True Believer Effect
The Pipe carries a unique legendary effect called True Believer, split into two bonuses. Equipping the Licensed Plumber perk raises damage by 20%. Once the "Craft or Scrap Pipe Weapons" challenge is complete, damage rises by another 20%. Both bonuses relate to pipe weapons. Licensed Plumber is an Intelligence perk unlocked at level 5 with a maximum of 3 ranks; it slows pipe weapon degradation by 20/40/60% and lowers repair costs. To get the full value from True Believer, pair The Pipe with that perk and finish the matching challenge.
The Pipe and the Standard Pipe Pistol
The Pipe is not the standard pipe pistol. The standard pipe pistol has been in Fallout 76 since launch, available through the main questline, from Scorched and Super Mutants, or crafted at a weapons workbench. The Pipe is a four-star legendary variant added with Gleaming Depths, and its acquisition route is separate from normal drops, vendors, and exchanges. The two share the same mod set, but The Pipe's value sits in its unique effect and its Easter egg background.

How to Get The Pipe
Obtaining The Pipe depends on outdoor random encounters. Look for the Strange Pipe, an object that appears as a pipe rising from the ground. Approach it, interact, and choose "Sniff." After the interaction there is a chance to receive The Pipe. The community estimates the chance at around 5%, though that figure is unofficial and results vary widely. The same character can obtain The Pipe more than once. Each Strange Pipe allows only one sniff per encounter. Some players equip Licensed Plumber while trying, but nothing confirms the perk is required.
Where the Strange Pipe Appears
The Strange Pipe has no fixed spawn point; it belongs to the outdoor random encounter pool. Reported areas include the boiler area near the Giant Teapot, the region around Thunder Mountain TM-01, the sparse Sundew grove south of Cranberry Bog, the roadside near Miner's Monument on Route 62, and Toxic Valley spots such as Wavy Willard's Waterpark, Clarksburg Shooting Club, and Hemlock Holes. Random encounter points reset after roughly 20 minutes. PC players can use map mods like Random Encounters UniMap to locate encounter points and cut down search time.
The Pipe leans toward collecting and Easter egg content rather than raw damage. Even with both True Believer bonuses active, a pipe pistol does not lead in late-game output. Its worth lies in the collection value and the continuation of "Pipe is Life." The acquisition process depends on random encounter spawns and repeated attempts; if no Strange Pipe appears in one area, move to another random encounter point. Since the drop chances and effect details come mainly from player testing and community records, treat those figures as provisional and check them against later game versions and official information.
