Diablo 4 Fast Leveling Guide: How to Hit Level 70 in One Sitting
Leveling a fresh character in Diablo 4 can swallow a whole weekend if you do it wrong, or a single sitting if you do it in the right order. The gap rarely comes down to skill or gear. It comes down to knowing which activities actually give XP and which ones only feel productive. Most players stall out not because they're slow, but because they're doing perfectly fine content in the wrong sequence.

Set Up Before You Grind
A few things save more time than any farm route, and only one of them involves killing monsters. If you've already finished the campaign on another character, skip it. That alone deletes hours. Grab your mount the moment it unlocks, because the travel time between objectives is the quiet time-killer of every run. And turn on your pet right away so gold and materials get vacuumed up without you stopping for them.
Unlocking your mercenaries early matters more than it sounds. Mercenary progression feeds into Bartering, which turns the loot you're not using into useful gear and materials for the rest of the run. It's a slow payoff, but starting it late means finishing it late.
The XP Sources Worth Your Time
Plenty of activities hand out XP, but only a handful are worth your time while leveling:
- Strongholds carry the early levels. Their monsters scale a couple levels above you no matter your difficulty, so the density and the fixed completion XP do the heavy lifting for roughly level 1 to 50.
- Helltide bundles XP, gear, and materials into one loop, and it overlaps naturally with Whispers if you run them in the same zone.
- Whispers from the Tree of Whispers pay out solid XP alongside gear, gold, and materials, and they're easy to stack with whatever you're already clearing.
- Kurast Undercity is a strong source once you can clear it fast. Spend a Tribute to enter, build Attunement by killing, and cash out at the end; a Tribute of Growth pushes the XP payout higher when you have one.
- Infernal Hordes work once you can clear them comfortably, bundling Aether, gear, and XP into a single loop.
The mistake isn't doing these. It's doing them one at a time instead of overlapping them. Helltide with Whispers stacked on top, Strongholds between Helltide windows, and Undercity when you want pure speed and don't care about gear.
A Rough Route From 1 to 70
The route I fall back on every season hasn't changed much in a while. Levels 1 to about 50 go to Strongholds, because the monsters there always sit a couple levels above you and the density is easy to chain. Past 50 I shift to Helltide with Whispers stacked on top, breaking for the Kurast Undercity whenever I'd rather have raw speed than gear. The Undercity only really pays off once you can clear it quickly, so forcing it too early is a trap.
You'll hit points where your weapon falls behind and your clear slows down. That's normal. Replace the weapon and keep moving, rather than grinding for a perfect roll mid-route. A weapon that's ten item levels old is the real reason most runs stall out past 50.
Small Things That Add Up
None of these look like much on their own, but stacked across a full run they cut the total down by a real margin:
- Group up. Standing near another player gives 5% bonus XP, and being in a party with them raises that to 10%.
- Keep an elixir up. Every elixir adds 5% bonus XP, so pop one whenever it wears off instead of saving them.
- Start the seasonal questline early. It unlocks the season's reputation track and rewards, and they build up while you level.
- Run the highest difficulty you can still burst through. XP and loot both scale up with difficulty, so a tier you can clear fast beats a tier you struggle in.
The group bonus and the elixir are the two freebies people forget most often, and they stack with everything else. The difficulty point matters the other way too: jumping a tier too early slows you down more than the extra XP is worth.
Class Choice Changes the Whole Run
Some classes level noticeably faster than others, and it's worth being honest about that if speed is the goal. Spiritborn with a Swarm Splitter setup is currently the fastest thing to 70. Rogue's Dance of Knives and Barbarian's Whirlwind both clear screens without stopping, which keeps the XP flowing.
That doesn't mean your favorite class is a mistake. It means a slower killing class takes longer, and that's fine if you'd rather enjoy the run. If you're leveling an alt to get it into endgame fast, pick the quick class and respec later. Time spent leveling is time not spent farming, so the class you pick is quietly the biggest decision in the whole route.
Leveling fast is mostly a sequencing problem. Skip the campaign, keep an elixir up, chain the XP sources in order, and the character that would have taken a weekend finishes in an evening. The hard part isn't any single farm. It's resisting the urge to run content that doesn't actually move the bar.
