How to Escape When Surrounded in ARC Raiders?
Most of the people who die in ARC Raiders aren't bad shots, they're the ones who refuse to run. A few ARC machines lock onto them, or two squads of players pinch them in, and their first instinct is to turn and fight, and then everything in their backpack is gone. It took me a while to get it: this game rewards what you carry out, not your kill count, so running when you're surrounded isn't cowardice, it's the best trade you'll make all raid. The thing is, there's a right way to run, and blindly sprinting gets you killed more often than not. Here's how to disengage safely when you're surrounded.

First decide: run or fight.
Running isn't just turning and sprinting, the first step is reading whether you should fight at all, and most of the time the answer is obvious.
- Low health or a full backpack: just run, fighting is a loss.
- Enemy position unknown or pinched from both sides: put distance first, standing your ground is a donation.
- Retreat early: running is your first option, not a last-resort thought when you're already dying.
Remember this: if you judge it wrong, the best gun won't save you, judge it right and you slip away empty-handed.
Smoke plus Photoelectric Cloak is the cleanest disengage combo.
These two are the most useful escape tools, one breaks lock-on, the other breaks line of sight, and together they're the standard get-out sequence.
- Smoke breaks lock-on: throw it at your feet or along your escape route. It interrupts ARC targeting and makes you nearly invisible to players.
- Slide right after: cut out of the cloud at an angle instead of running straight; the straight line is exactly what they're chasing.
- Cloak drops locks: pop the Photoelectric Cloak and nearby ARCs lose their lock instantly, even mid-fight.
- Cloak only works on machines: don't rely on it against chasing players. Use smoke and terrain instead, or pop it so the ARCs turn on the uncloaked players behind you.
The order is smoke at your feet, slide out, cloak up, then walk slowly to hard cover, don't panic-sprint, because sprinting just pulls aggro again.
Hook, slide, and holster to max out your speed.
Smoke and cloak aren't enough on their own, you need speed, because you only escape if they can't catch you.
- Hook up high: fling the Snap Hook up a building or across the street; vertical movement is the hardest path for ARCs to chase.
- Holster for speed: put the gun away when you're running, holstering noticeably speeds you up.
- Bring a speed item: something like Espresso, those few extra seconds of speed are your survival window.
Speed is hard currency in an escape, half a beat faster means one more round alive.

Route matters more than speed.
Direction beats speed. Run downhill, run to lower ground, going down is harder to chase than going up, especially when it's players on your tail. Keep an eye out for ziplines and vents along the way, those are ready-made escape routes, don't do everything on foot in a straight line. The extraction point deserves extra care: the freight elevator sounds an alarm and tells everyone where you are, so take a quiet exit when you can, and extraction points are often mined, so scan before you sprint in. And don't sprint the whole way, that's too loud, move a stretch, hug a wall, catch your breath until the lock-on drops, then keep going. The people who survive getting surrounded are the ones who can both hide and run.
Getting surrounded isn't the scary part, the scary part is your brain going hot and turning to fight. Set your mindset first, judge whether to fight, and if it's time to run, run decisively, then work the smoke, slide, and cloak sequence to shake the lock-on, use the hook and holster to pick up speed, and pick a route that goes downhill, stays quiet, and has no mines. Drill it enough and you'll see that the people who die most in ARC Raiders were never the unarmed ones, they were the ones who wouldn't let go. Next time you're surrounded, don't linger, get out first, and if you carry the loot home, that raid was a win.
