Can Skill Make Up for Gear in Legend of Ymir Expeditions?
Expeditions are the core PvE content in Legend of Ymir, spanning five-player boss fights to fifteen-player raids across a wide difficulty range. Every player staring at the recommended combat power number on the expedition screen asks the same question: if my gear falls short, can I bridge the gap with mechanics and execution? The answer is completely different depending on whether you are looking at Normal or Nightmare difficulty. Normal expeditions treat gear as a hard requirement. Nightmare expeditions run on an entirely different set of rules. Here is how the two differ across four angles: the mechanical gap between Normal and Nightmare, the fixed-damage design of Nightmare, the actual ceiling of player skill, and the entry requirements.

Normal Expeditions: Gear Is the Pass Line
The recommended combat power on Normal expeditions is not a suggestion. It is the admission ticket.
- Five-player Normal expeditions come in level thirty, thirty-five, and forty brackets. Each tier carries an explicit combat power and level requirement. Fall below it and both your damage output and survivability simply do not hold up.
- Normal expedition damage formulas are driven by gear stats. If your attack is too low, you cannot kill the boss. If your defense is too low, one hit puts you on the ground. Mechanics cannot fix a numbers gap.
- Player skill only becomes relevant once gear meets the threshold. Good positioning reduces unnecessary damage taken. Knowing the fight shortens clear times. But gear is the baseline and skill is the bonus. That order cannot be reversed.
Normal expeditions follow one rule: gear qualifies you first, skill optimizes the run second. There is no shortcut.
Nightmare Expeditions: Fixed Damage and Percentage-Based HP Flatten the Gear Gap
Nightmare difficulty was added in 2026, with versions for both five-player and fifteen-player expeditions. The official patch notes state the design intent directly: strategy and control far outweigh growth stats.
- Damage dealt to the boss is a fixed value. The fixed amount differs between melee and ranged classes, but it has zero connection to your personal gear, attack power, crit rate, or penetration. A fully enhanced weapon and an average one land the same number against a Nightmare boss.
- Damage taken by players is calculated as a percentage of maximum HP. Stacking a larger health pool does not make you tankier. A hit removes the same percentage regardless of your total HP. Defense and evasion stats do not provide additional mitigation here. Staying alive depends entirely on positioning and skill timing.
- Revivals are hard-capped. Once you exhaust your allotted resurrections, you are removed from the expedition. A single player's mistake means a permanent loss of a team member for the team. No amount of gear buys you an extra life.
Nightmare difficulty was built with one goal, stated explicitly in the patch notes: reduce gear variables to the absolute minimum and make execution and strategy the deciding factor.

How Far Skill Can Actually Take You
In Nightmare difficulty, player skill is the lead actor. But it has clear boundaries.
- Mechanical knowledge determines whether you belong in the fight at all. Boss tell animations, AoE indicators, and safe positioning zones form an invisible set of armor. Know them and you are equipped. Walk in blind and you are a liability.
- Party composition affects overall output efficiency. Melee and ranged classes deal different fixed damage values. Team structure directly influences clear speed. In fifteen-player raids with limited revivals, who you bring matters more than what gear they are wearing.
- There is a hard skill floor with no safety net. Percentage-based damage means every hit taken is real damage. There is no buffer and no margin for error. If you cannot dodge the mechanic, you go down. No one can carry you through that.
In Nightmare difficulty, skill fully replaces gear as the determining factor. But the prerequisite is that the player's own execution clears the bar. Below that bar, nothing helps.
Entry Requirements: Gear Still Guards the Door
Nightmare expeditions are not zero-barrier content. Gear and progression still matter before you step inside.
- Level requirements are absolute. Nightmare Fregna requires level fifty-five. Nightmare Hrungnir requires level fifty-three. If your level does not meet the threshold, the door does not open.
- Entry consumes crafted feathers. Nightmare feathers are obtained through crafting rather than a free daily allowance. The crafting materials themselves require a minimum level of account progression to acquire. A character with too thin a foundation cannot even secure entry tickets.
- Nightmare rewards include Epic-grade equipment and token fragments. The gear earned from clearing Nightmare feeds back into your Normal-mode combat power, creating a loop: level and feathers get you through the door, execution gets you the clear, and the clear rewards patch up your gear.
Gear stands guard at the Nightmare gate. Once inside, skill takes over. The two handle separate legs of the journey.
Whether skill can make up for gear in Legend of Ymir expeditions depends entirely on which difficulty you are stepping into. Normal expeditions demand gear as the baseline. Meet it first. Nightmare expeditions flatten the gear gap through fixed damage and percentage-based HP mechanics, making execution and strategy the only real variables. This is the design direction stated in black and white in the official patch notes. But Nightmare still requires level thresholds and crafted materials to enter. A character with too weak a foundation cannot even reach the door. Gear walks you to the gate. Skill carries you the rest of the way. Each plays its part at a different stage of the journey.
