FC 27 Best Formations and Tactics
Every year the same thing happens in Ultimate Team. People copy a formation from a pro, paste the tactics, and then wonder why they still lose. The formation is only half of it. The roles, the line height, and the players you slot into it matter just as much, and most of what gets shared online ignores all three. The people who win consistently are rarely the ones with the most expensive teams. They are the ones whose setup matches how the game actually plays. This is what actually works in FC 27 right now.

Why 4-2-1-3 Is the Meta
The 4-2-1-3 is running away with the game this year, and the reason is boring rather than exciting. Defense got harder.
AI defending is weaker in FC 27, so you cannot lean on the game to bail you out. That makes the two CDMs in the 4-2-1-3 worth their weight in gold because they sit in front of the back four and clean up the mess you leave behind. In past years you could get away with one CDM or none at all. That changed this year, and the formation data shows it. Roughly a quarter of all community squads run the 4-2-1-3, and around a fifth of pro squads do as well, which is about as close to a consensus as this game ever gets.
The Roles That Make It Work
A formation without the right roles is just eleven dots on a screen.
The striker should be an Advanced Forward on Attack. Through balls are fully manual this year, so you want someone who actually runs behind instead of dropping into midfield. The wide players should be Inside Forwards, not Wingers. Crossing got worse in FC 27, so hugging the line and swinging balls in is a dead end. Let them cut inside and shoot. Here is the full setup.
- Striker: Advanced Forward on Attack.
- Wide players: Inside Forward, not Winger.
- CAM: Playmaker or Shadow Striker.
- CDMs: Deep-Lying Playmaker on Build-Up.
- Fullbacks: Fullback on Defend.
The CDM pairing is the part people get wrong most. They use defensive midfielders and then wonder why the attack stalls. Deep-Lying Playmakers hold position but still progress the ball, which is exactly what the formation needs.
Other Formations Worth Running
The 4-2-1-3 is the safest choice, but it is not the only one.
The 4-4-1-1 is the best counter-attacking setup, with two banks of four and a CAM sitting behind the striker. It runs about a quarter of community squads, so it is the clear second pick. The 4-2-3-1 Wide suits players who hate losing the ball because the double pivot plus wide midfielders gives you passing options all over the pitch. The 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow is the sleeper. It only shows up in about seven percent of community squads, but pros use it at nearly double that rate because it overloads the middle with two strikers. If you are just starting out and want something simple, the 4-4-2 still works in the lower Rivals divisions. Just run Inside Forwards on the flanks instead of Wingers.
Line Height and Build-Up: The Settings That Matter
Most of the losses you take from a "bad" formation are actually from bad settings.
The sweet spot for line height is between 50 and 60. Anything higher and one through ball kills you because the game punishes aggressive lines hard this year. Build-up should stay Balanced. Counter sounds like a fast route to goals, but it leaves you wide open the moment you lose the ball. Set the defensive approach to Balanced as well. Aggressive pressing sounds good until a single pass pulls two of your players out of position. Manual defending is not optional anymore because the AI will not do it for you. The players who struggle with the 4-2-1-3 are almost always the ones still leaning on the CPU to tackle for them.
How to Pick Players for the Meta
A formation is only as good as the people you put in it, and this year the requirements are specific.
Pace matters most on the wings and fullbacks because Inside Forwards and overlapping fullbacks live or die by it. Your striker needs finishing above everything else. The PlayStyles that fit the meta are Finesse Shot, Rapid, and Technical, so hunt for those instead of just the highest overall rating. You do not need a full team of icons to start. Cards like Murillo at center back, Camavinga in midfield, Pedro Neto on the wing, and Marmoush up front do the job early and cost almost nothing. The order matters too. Fix the fullbacks and striker first, since those are the positions where a bad card hurts the most, then fill in the midfield.
