Taming A Pet Megasloth Or Deathclaw Guide & Location-Fallout76
In Fallout 76, both the Mega Sloth and the Deathclaw can serve as C.A.M.P. pets. Taming either creature requires equipping the Animal Friend perk at its maximum rank and finding an ordinary individual that spawned alone at a qualifying random encounter scene. Creatures spawned at fixed locations, legendary variants, and Scorched versions do not qualify for taming.

What You Need Before Taming
Animal Friend is the core perk required to tame a Mega Sloth or a Deathclaw, and it must be raised to Rank 3. The card belongs to the Charisma category. At its highest rank, a qualifying creature shows a Tame prompt when aimed at. Wasteland Whisperer is mainly used to pacify other kinds of creatures, such as the Mirelurk King and the Snallygaster, and it cannot replace Animal Friend for taming a Mega Sloth or a Deathclaw. To tame from a distance, aim down sights with a ranged weapon that has iron sights or a reflex sight; a magnified scope hides the ranged Tame prompt. You can also walk directly up to the creature and use the interaction prompt, which works regardless of the equipped weapon. A deployed C.A.M.P. on the current server is required. Tamed animals do not count against the build budget, but they still need open ground to move and spawn without getting stuck in camp structures.
Tameable and Non-Tameable Creatures
Whether a Mega Sloth or Deathclaw can be tamed depends on how it spawned. Only an ordinary individual that spawned alone at a random encounter scene qualifies. These creatures usually appear at low levels, around 21 for a Deathclaw and 20 for a Mega Sloth, though the exact level can vary by game version and spawn situation.
The following creatures do not qualify for taming:
Fixed spawns: a Deathclaw or Mega Sloth that spawns at a set location under fixed rules cannot be tamed through the usual method.
Legendary or glowing variants: legendary creatures and glowing variants do not count as qualifying ordinary individuals.
Scorched versions: these creatures cannot be tamed as normal camp pets and, in some cases, may attack objects within the camp.
Grouped individuals: if the target appears alongside others of its kind, it usually does not meet the single-spawn requirement.
When searching, distinguish random encounter scenes from fixed spawn points. Deathclaw Island, Abandoned Waste Dump, and Thunder Mountain Substation all have fixed Deathclaw spawns, and the individuals that appear there cannot be tamed directly. Locations such as Southern Belle Motel and Tanagra Town also have regular Mega Sloth spawns, but these fixed individuals do not qualify either.
Recommended Taming Locations
The following locations can be used to search for random encounter scenes. Because creature spawns are random, the actual results may vary by server and game version.
The crashed Vertibird north of Abbie's Bunker (The Mire): players report a random encounter scene at the west end of the pond near this area, which can be used to find qualifying creatures.
Fort Atlas: after fast-traveling to the area, head north along the train tracks and check the bushes near the first bend.
General's Steakhouse: check the area near the run-down building and under the bridge for possible random encounter scenes.
Under the bridge between Crevasse Dam and Red Rocket: this area has records of a random encounter scene and can serve as a checkpoint along a search route.
Near The Cross in the northeast of the map: several player-reported scene spots are scattered around, and each can be checked in turn.
These locations do not guarantee a Mega Sloth or Deathclaw spawn every time. Some scene spots may generate other creatures or events, so the search requires repeated checks, and routes should be adjusted based on what appears.

Taming Process and Camp Move-In
Once a qualifying target is confirmed, follow these steps:
Equip Animal Friend: raise the card to Rank 3 and confirm it is equipped.
Find a solo target: travel to a random encounter scene and check for an ordinary Mega Sloth or Deathclaw that spawned alone.
Aim and choose Tame: aim down sights with iron sights or a reflex sight, or walk up and use the interaction prompt. When the Tame prompt appears, select it to complete the tame.
Wait for the creature to reach camp: after a successful tame, the creature travels to the assigned C.A.M.P. on its own. It may encounter other players or hostiles along the way, so following and protecting it is recommended.
Confirm camp status: after the pet arrives, check whether it appears normally. A Mega Sloth or Deathclaw may take on camp defense duties, and its name or marker may show red at times, which does not necessarily mean it has become hostile.
If the pet is killed while traveling, it usually cannot be recovered through the standard actions. After taming, minimize unnecessary movement and watch for hostiles along the route.
Things to Watch For
Random encounter scene results are not fixed, so finding a qualifying target may require switching servers multiple times and searching repeatedly. Some players spend hours before encountering a target, so it helps to plan a check route and prioritize known scene spots. Camp pet status can also be unstable. A pet may die while traveling, become stuck in a building foundation, or fail to appear after relogging. In some cases it reappears after relogging, but in others it cannot be recovered. Before taming, confirm the camp location and leave enough open ground, and avoid moving the camp frequently. In addition, creature spawn rules and random encounter scene distribution can change with game updates. Some players report that certain older locations no longer spawn Mega Sloths or Deathclaws after the updates related to Ogua and Blue Devil. Since these situations can be affected by version and server state, check current information before starting a full search.
Common Questions
Do I need both Animal Friend and Wasteland Whisperer to tame a Mega Sloth or Deathclaw?
No. For these two animals, Animal Friend at Rank 3 is enough. Wasteland Whisperer applies to creatures such as the Mirelurk King and the Snallygaster, not to the Mega Sloth or the Deathclaw.
Can I tame the Deathclaw at Deathclaw Island?
No. That Deathclaw is a fixed spawn, and fixed spawns do not qualify. Only a lone Deathclaw that appears at a random encounter scene can be tamed.
Why does my tamed pet show a red marker?
Tamed creatures often keep a red, hostile-looking marker even though they are friendly and guard the camp. The red marker does not mean the pet has turned hostile.
Will my pet stay forever?
Not reliably. Tamed pets can die while traveling, become stuck in camp structures, or vanish after relogging. Some return after relogging, while others are lost permanently.
To tame a Mega Sloth or Deathclaw, equip Animal Friend at Rank 3 and find an ordinary individual that spawned alone at a random encounter scene. The crashed Vertibird north of Abbie's Bunker and Fort Atlas can serve as priority locations to check, but they do not guarantee a target every time. After taming, the creature travels to the C.A.M.P. on its own and should be protected along the way. Because the pet's travel and persistence can be uncertain, be prepared to search repeatedly.
