How to Get Shattered Grounds in Fallout 76

Share: WhatsAppReddit

Shattered Grounds is a Handmade Rifle introduced in Fallout 76's Skyline Valley update. It arrives with three fixed legendary effects and a unique skin, and it never enters the regular legendary drop pool—you will not find it as a random enemy drop or a legendary exchange roll. The only way to obtain it is to finish the Skyline Valley main quest Double-Crossed Wires and make the right call at the end. There is no drop farming to chase: follow the Skyline Valley story, complete the quest, and hand the intel to the right NPC. The choice you make in that final step determines whether the rifle is handed over as your reward.

How to Get Shattered Grounds in Fallout 76

Advancing the Skyline Valley Story to Vault 63

Shattered Grounds is tied to the Skyline Valley story. You keep moving through the Skyline Valley questline, side with Oberlin at Vault 63, and continue until the quest reaches Double-Crossed Wires. Once it starts, Oberlin sends you to High Knob Lookout in the western reach of Skyline Valley to investigate Daniel, an agent who has gone silent. High Knob Lookout is the central investigation site for the quest and the place where you pick up the information that moves the story forward. Follow the quest marker to High Knob Lookout, work through the location, and complete the objectives. The quest does not call for special gear—just carry out each objective as it comes up.

Investigating High Knob Lookout

By the time you reach High Knob Lookout, the Blood Eagles hold the site and Yao Guai roam nearby. Clear the enemies first, then look over the lookout itself. On the right side of the lookout tower is a hatch that leads down into the basement. Inside, a Blood Eagles leader in power armor holds the floor; defeating it drops a key that opens the back room. In that room you find Daniel's body and the quest items—his intel report and a confession in which he admits to being a double agent. Once you pick these up, the story thread of Double-Crossed Wires is nearly complete, and the next step is to return and report to Oberlin.

The Ending Choice Decides Whether You Get Shattered Grounds

After the investigation at High Knob Lookout, you bring the intel back and face the final handoff. There are two ways to resolve it: hand the report and the confession to Oberlin honestly, or pass the information to Hugo. To receive Shattered Grounds, you must give the intel to Oberlin. Choosing Hugo means you do not get the rifle. The weapon will not show up through revisiting the area, killing more enemies, or re-checking the site—your choice here is what decides the reward. If your goal is Shattered Grounds, choose Oberlin at the end and finish the handoff as the quest directs.

The Fixed Legendary Effects

Shattered Grounds has fixed legendary effects, so there is nothing to reroll with legendary modules. The rifle carries three:

Junkie's: +10% damage per active addiction, up to +50%.

Explosive: bullets explode, dealing 20% of weapon damage.

Lightweight: -90% weapon weight.

The rifle comes in levels 15, 25, 35, and 45, with base damage of 30, 35, 40, and 45. Shattered Grounds uses 5.56 or Ultracite 5.56 ammunition, holds 20 rounds by default, and has a fire rate of 75, a range of 192, and an accuracy of 80. The level 45 version weighs 1.26, so with the Lightweight effect it barely touches your carry weight. For characters that watch their equipment weight, that is one of the rifle's more noticeable qualities.

Is Shattered Grounds Worth Getting?

The main appeal of Shattered Grounds is its fixed rolls and its single, quest-only source. The Junkie's effect draws its damage from addictions, so the rifle suits characters who already run a Chem build and keep their addictions up. If you do not use Chems or do not build around Junkie's, most of the value shifts to the Explosive effect and the weight savings from Lightweight.

It still works as a finished Handmade Rifle, but how it performs depends on your attributes, perk setup, ammo type, and gear. For players collecting quest rewards, filling out a Skyline Valley weapon set, or running a Junkie's rifle build, Shattered Grounds is well worth picking up. Because it comes only from this quest reward and has no regular drop source, you cannot farm it from ordinary enemies.

To get Shattered Grounds, advance the Skyline Valley story, complete Double-Crossed Wires, investigate Daniel's trail at High Knob Lookout, and return with the quest items. When you hand over the intel, give it to Oberlin. The rifle's legendary effects, skin, and main stats are all fixed—there is no random drop involved. Complete Double-Crossed Wires and side with Oberlin in the final choice, and you will receive this unique Handmade Rifle.
