How to Level Fast in Diablo 4 - A No-Nonsense XP Guide

Jul 21, 2026
Share: WhatsAppReddit

I've taken every class to level 60 at least twice, and I've made just about every leveling mistake there is along the way. The biggest one was treating guides like recipes - follow step one, then step two, then step three - instead of understanding what actually generates XP and stacking those things together.

Once I stopped chasing 'the one best method' and started overlapping activities, my leveling time dropped by more than half. Here's how I think about it now.

Start With Helltides, Not Dungeons

A lot of guides tell you to chain-run dungeons from level 1. I did that for my first three characters. It works. It's also slower than it needs to be.

Helltides are available from level 1 on any difficulty, and the monster density is simply higher than most dungeons at low levels. More monsters per minute means more XP per minute - it's not more complicated than that. I enter the first available Helltide immediately on a fresh character and stay there until it ends.

While inside, I prioritize three things: map events (the orange circles), Tortured Gifts chests (spend your Aberrant Cinders, don't hoard them - you'll earn more), and Hellborne spawns when the threat meter gets high. Hellborne are the real prize. They spawn in groups, they're worth solid XP, and they drop more Cinders than regular mobs.

At low levels, your clear speed is high relative to monster health because of difficulty scaling. You can delete entire packs with basic skills. That drops off around level 40 or so as your gear starts lagging behind, which is exactly when you should start mixing in other activities.

Weave in Whispers While the Helltide Is Active

The Tree of Whispers gives you Grim Favors - basically bounty objectives - and turning in 10 Favors gets you a Whisper Cache. Those caches contain a solid chunk of XP plus gear and materials.

The trick is that many Whisper objectives overlap with Helltide zones. Kill 100 cultists in the same region where you are already farming Helltide mobs. Complete a dungeon that is marked for both Whispers and the Helltide. Clear a cellar or two while moving between event markers. You are doing the same killing either way - you just get paid twice for it.

I usually complete one full Whisper turn-in per Helltide without going out of my way. That is bonus XP on top of everything the Helltide is already giving you. Do this consistently from level 1 to 60 and it adds up to a lot of saved time.

Strongholds Give the Biggest Single XP Drops

Strongholds are the fixed-XP spike you use when leveling starts to drag. Each Stronghold gives a large chunk of XP when you kill the boss, and another chunk when you light the Wanderer's Shrine to complete it. It is not scaling XP based on monster kills - it is a flat reward, and at certain level ranges that flat reward is significant.

I save them for the 30-50 stretch. That is the range where Helltide XP starts feeling slower because your gear has not kept up, and you do not yet have the build pieces that make dungeons fast. Clearing three or four Strongholds during that window can push you through the worst of the leveling curve in under an hour.

Do not burn them too early. At level 10, a Stronghold's XP is wasted - you would get those levels in Helltides in five minutes anyway. Wait until each level feels like work, then cash them in.

Dungeons and the Pit - Kill Density, Skip Stragglers

At some point - usually around 45 to 50 - you will want to mix in dungeons. Specifically, Nightmare Dungeons once they are available, and later the Pit.

Here is the thing about dungeon XP that took me way too long to learn: you do not clear the whole dungeon. You run through, kill elite packs and dense clusters of normal mobs, and ignore the two or three stragglers standing in a corner. The time you spend chasing down scattered mobs is time you could be spending killing the next elite pack in the next room. The XP-per-minute math is brutal on this - every second spent on a single skeleton archer is a second not spent on a pack of 15 cultists.

If you can group up - even with one other person - dungeons get significantly more efficient. The party XP bonus (roughly 10% between nearby and partied bonuses) is nice, but the real gain is splitting up to clear different wings simultaneously. Two players covering two paths finishes a dungeon about twice as fast, and you both get XP for all of it as long as you stay in the same zone.

The Pit becomes the best consistent XP farm once you hit 60 and start pushing Paragon levels. It is dense, it is fast, and it levels your Glyphs at the same time - so you are never choosing between XP and progression. Run the highest tier you can clear in under three minutes. Pushing higher tiers for more XP per kill is tempting, but if your clear time doubles, you are losing XP per hour. Clear speed first, tier second.

XP Buffs - Do Not Be Lazy About These

I used to forget these constantly. I would realize I had been grinding for 20 minutes without an Elixir up and feel like an idiot. Now I set a mental checkpoint every time I portal to town: Elixir still active? Incense still burning?

Together these add up to a 15-20%+ XP bonus before seasonal mechanics. That is the difference between hitting 60 in six hours versus eight. The buffs feel small individually, which is exactly why people skip them. Do not.

Things I See People Get Wrong

Pushing difficulty too early is the most common mistake, and I have done it myself more than once. World Tier 3 gives more XP per kill than World Tier 2, sure. But if you are spending 15 seconds per pack instead of 3, you are getting less XP per minute - and per minute is the only metric that matters. Move up when you are one-shotting everything on your current tier and fights are getting boring.

Standing in town between runs kills your momentum faster than any bad build or wrong activity choice. I am serious about this. Salvage quickly, stash quickly, get back out. I try to keep town stops under 60 seconds. Longer than that and I know I am either overthinking my gear or getting distracted.

Leveling with an underleveled weapon is another one. Around level 35-40, your weapon from level 20 is holding you back more than you realize. If you have not found an upgrade naturally, spend some Obols at the Purveyor of Curiosities or check vendors. A cheap weapon upgrade that adds 30% damage pays for itself within minutes in faster clear times.

And do not sleep on Legion events when they pop up. They are not worth going out of your way for, but if one is starting nearby while you are already in a Helltide, do it. The XP from the event itself plus the loot from the three chests at the end make it a solid five-minute detour.

Putting It Together - What My Leveling Sessions Actually Look Like

On a fresh character, I pop an Elixir as soon as I reach the first major town (usually Kyovashad, around level 5-7), grab whatever Incense I can afford, and open the map to find an active Helltide. From there, I bounce between events, open chests as Cinders accumulate, and check my Whisper objectives every few minutes to see if I am accidentally completing any.

Around level 30, when the leveling pace starts to slow, I clear two or three Strongholds for those big XP injections. By 45, I am mixing in Nightmare Dungeons - still hitting Helltides when they are up, still completing Whispers in the background.

At 60, it becomes a rhythm of Pit runs for Paragon XP and Glyph levels, with Helltides for materials and Infernal Hordes when I want a change of pace. The activities change, but the core idea stays the same - always overlap, never do just one thing at a time, and keep the buffs running.

It is not flashy and it does not rely on whichever seasonal mechanic is currently broken. But it works every season, on every class, and it has gotten me to endgame faster than any 'one weird trick' guide ever has.
