Diablo 4 Splinters of Evil: Which to Pick

Nov 2, 2026

Season 15 hands you a choice the moment you start chasing the seasonal stuff: which Prime Evil's power you carry. It is not a permanent decision, but it shapes how you spend your time, so most players want it right the first time. Here is how the three Splinters of Evil work and which one you should actually pick. Unlike a lot of seasonal systems, this one rewards a quick decision rather than endless research.

Three Splinters, Three Lanes

The three Splinters of Evil come from the three Prime Evils, and each one is tied to a damage type and a set of activities it boosts. The catch is that carrying one also makes you more vulnerable to that same Prime Evil, who will stalk you while you are out farming. It is a real trade, not a flavor text line. You pick the lane you want to spend time in, and you accept that its owner comes looking for you. That pressure is what keeps the choice from having one obvious answer, and it is also why a lot of players end up swapping mid-season instead of committing to one for the whole run.

What Each Splinter Actually Does

The pattern is easy to read once you see it laid out. Each Splinter pairs a damage type with a set of endgame activities, and the activities are the real reason you pick one over another. The damage type matters less than most people think at first, because you are choosing a farm lane, not a build. Once you know which activities you actually run each week, the best Splinter picks itself.

Which One to Pick First

Most players start with Destruction, Baal's Splinter. The reasoning is simple: the Undercity loop is fast, and the extra boss trophies help you gear up early when your build is still loose. Once you hit the level cap and start chasing Paragon points and glyph levels, most people swap to Hatred, Mephisto's Splinter, because the Pit and Nightmare Dungeons are where that late grind actually lives. Terror, Diablo's Splinter, is the niche pick, mostly for people who main Helltides and Hordes and want those rewards turned up. A common plan is Destruction early and Hatred late, and that plan holds because the swap is cheap. You just need another physical Splinter in your inventory to switch, so you are never locked in for the whole season.

Whichever you carry, expect the matching Prime Evil to show up at bad moments. The vulnerability is the season's way of reminding you that the power is borrowed, and it is part of why the choice is not purely upside. You pay a little risk every time you step into the boosted activity, and that risk is what keeps the three lanes feeling distinct.

How to Farm the Splinters

The reputation cache route is the one people overlook, and it is honestly the easiest if you are already doing the seasonal board anyway. Boss farming is better when you want a specific Splinter fast, and Baal is the pick for raw speed. If you only remember one farming tip, remember that you can get all three types from Baal, which means a single short route can fill out your collection.

The One Mistake to Avoid

There is one habit that costs people Splinters: right-clicking them. Clicking a Splinter consumes it to swap your active power, which is fine when you mean to swap, but a lot of players burn one by accident while trying to store it. The bigger caution is for the Echo of Tristram secret. If you are collecting all three Splinters to unlock that fight and the Hellfire Torch, do not consume them. Save all three, then use them together. It is the kind of detail that is easy to miss until you have already deleted the Splinter you needed, and it is exactly the sort of thing that turns a smooth season into a frustrating one.
