Diablo 4 Meat or Treat Event Guide
The Halloween window brings two separate events to Season 15, and it is easy to blur them together. Meat or Treat is the shrine mechanic, the one that turns every dungeon shrine into a coin flip that can drop the Butcher on top of you. March of the Goblins is the reputation event, with its own board in Kyovashad and its own cosmetic track. Both wrap up in the first days of November, so the window is short. Here is what each one actually gives you.

What Happens When You Hit a Shrine
The Meat or Treat mechanic is simple. During the event, activating a shrine inside a dungeon adds a surprise effect on top of the shrine's normal bonus. That surprise can be a treat or a trick, and Blizzard has kept the full list of outcomes vague to preserve the shock. The ones players have pinned down so far:
- The Infernal Butcher can spawn right on top of you. This is the outcome everyone wants, because the Butcher drops Legendaries and Uniques and has a real shot at Mythic Uniques.
- Treasure Goblins appear far more often, and there is a rare chance a shrine dumps an entire swarm of them on you at once.
- Some tricks are genuinely dangerous, the kind that can wipe a careless run, but Blizzard has framed them as deadly gambles that can pay out extra rewards if you survive.
The spawn rates this week have been generous by any standard. Players report the Butcher turning up far more often than his usual rare dungeon appearance, and even a bad luck run still feels busy because of the goblin uptick. That is the whole appeal: a shrine stops being a small buff and becomes a potential loot event.
The Butcher Is the Real Draw
The Butcher is what separates Meat or Treat from a normal cosmetic week. His standard dungeon appearance rate is low enough that most players meet him a handful of times across an entire season. During the event he becomes a farming target, and the loot matches how much rarer he normally is. He drops Legendary and Unique items with a chance at Mythic Uniques, plus boss summoning materials and Runes, which are exactly the things an endgame player tends to run short on. The XP is solid too, which matters if you are still climbing the Torment ladder.
In practice the event turns every dungeon into a short boss run. That is a far better use of a shrine affix than the usual small stat boost, and it is the reason people who normally ignore seasonal fluff are actually running dungeons this week.
The March of the Goblins Reputation Board
March of the Goblins is its own event, and it is where the guaranteed rewards live. It has a reputation board in Kyovashad that you fill by killing Treasure Goblins. Meat or Treat has no board of its own. It only changes what shrines do. The goblin track pays out:
- Regalia of the Sacred Creed, a mount armor cosmetic rather than character armor.
- The March of the Goblins Emblem.
- One Resplendent Spark, the currency used to craft Mythic Uniques.
- Goblin gift caches holding gold, crafting materials, Tempering Manuals, and Obols.
Higher reputation ranks also raise the chance that goblins drop extra treasure bags. If you only have an hour to spare, the Spark is the thing worth hitting the board for. It feeds straight into Mythic Unique crafting, and those stay useful long after the event ends.
How to Farm It Fast
The efficient route is to stack shrines and goblins at the same time. Nightmare Sigils that roll shrine affixes, Greed Shrines especially, give you more coin flips per run, and the goblin-boosting War Plans like Goblinfall, Greed is Good, and Horadric Hunter keep the reputation bar moving. None of this hangs on a specific gear piece, which is worth knowing because the event feeds on affixes rather than any single drop.
If you are only after the reputation track, Infernal Hordes with the Total Chaos upgrade is the fastest route when it cooperates. Goblin chaos waves are random, not guaranteed, but if you roll one it can carry you through several ranks at once. You do not need a specialized build, just a character who can survive the Butcher showing up mid-pack. That last part matters more than people expect, because dying to a surprise Butcher after opening a shrine wastes both the shrine and the coin flip.
Is It Worth It in the Final Days
The honest answer depends on what you still need. The cosmetics are fine but not special, and missing them will not bother most people. The Resplendent Spark is the one reward with real staying power, and the Butcher farming is genuinely good loot while it lasts. If you have been meaning to stock boss materials or take another swing at a Mythic Unique, the final days of the event are a cheap way to do both at once.
If you are already capped and finished with your build, you can skip it without losing sleep. The event will likely return next Halloween in some form, but the Butcher rates this season have been good enough that I would not count on them being this generous again.
