Diablo 4 Amazon Class: Everything We Know
Diablo 4 is getting its ninth class, but it won't arrive the way previous ones did. The Amazon, revealed at BlizzCon 2026, is a female-only class built around four archetypes. It adds a brand-new weapon type, and it comes without an expansion attached. Blizzard is targeting the first half of 2027.
A lot of the early reaction has centered on the gender lock and the price, so both are worth a closer look before anything else.
Why the Amazon Matters
The Amazon stacks a few firsts on top of each other. It is the first female-only class in Diablo 4, which means no gender option when you make one. It is the first class sold as a standalone pack instead of being bundled into an expansion. And it is a Diablo 2 classic that never made the jump to Diablo 4 until now.
The gender lock is the part players argue about most. Every class since Diablo 4 launched has offered a male and female option, so this breaks that. Blizzard's reasoning is lore: the Amazon is an Askari of Skovos, a matriarchal society where only women take up the warrior's path, and senior game director Brent Gibson framed it as staying true to the real-world inspiration and 25 years of Diablo history. The forums split on it. Some see it as faithful to the original Amazon and the Xena-style fantasy behind her. Others feel it walks back two years of character customization, and they raise the flip question of how a male-locked class would be received.
The character comes from Skovos, the island introduced in the Lord of Hatred expansion, so the story groundwork is already laid. Blizzard describes the class around three pillars, battle expertise, athleticism, and mythical magic. The result is a class that covers melee, mid-range, and long-range at once. For veterans who played Diablo 2, this is the class coming home. For everyone else, it is a new thing wearing an old name.
The Four Archetypes
The class is built around four archetypes, and the naming tells you the playstyle before you read a skill:
- Champion. Sword and shield up front, buffs for the party, with cold magic as one of its tools.
- Skirmisher. The hit-and-run javelin specialist, favoring lightning among its imbues.
- Ranger. The long-range bow archer, with piercing arrows that can carry fire.
- Commander. The summoner of the bunch, calling in phalanxes of Valkyries to hold the field.
That spread is the point. Most classes lock you into one range, but the Amazon moves across melee, mid-range, and long-range depending on the archetype. The elements are not hard locks either. The class as a whole draws on poison, cold, fire, lightning, and physical damage, the same compound way Diablo 2's Amazon did, where a bow could hold ice and fire arrows and a javelin could be soaked in poison or lightning. The archetype mostly tells you the weapon and the range, not a single element.
Players who remember Diablo 2 will see the old builds in the new names. The Javazon maps to the Skirmisher, the Bowazon to the Ranger, and the Commander scales the old Valkyrie summon into a full phalanx instead of one pet.
The Javelin Is the Real News
Everyone talks about the archetypes, but the javelin is the detail worth watching. It is a brand-new weapon type in Diablo 4, the first single-handed ranged weapon the game has had, and it comes with unlimited quantity instead of an ammo pool to manage. It belongs to the Skirmisher archetype, and a new weapon class drops into the loot pool, which ripples through every build that can use it and brings new affixes and new roll priorities for anyone chasing a Skirmisher.
The rest of the kit is more familiar. The Champion runs sword and shield, and the reveal art also showed spears, bows, and shields in play. The javelin is the only genuinely new piece, and it is the kind of addition that changes how gear gets valued next year. Expect the economy to move the week it drops.
Sold as a Class Pack, Not an Expansion
This is the part that changes how Diablo 4 sells content. Every new class before this came inside an expansion. The Amazon comes as a standalone Class Pack, no expansion required, in the first half of 2027.
Blizzard has not named a price yet, and that is the one detail players keep asking about. The model makes sense for a class that does not bring a new zone or campaign, but pricing it wrong could turn the loudest request into the loudest complaint. There is also a world where this pack becomes the template for future classes, so the launch is a test in more ways than one.

What We Still Do Not Know
The reveal showed a lot, but it held back the parts people actually decide on. Full skill trees are not out yet. Pricing is not out. There is no exact release date beyond the first half of 2027 window.
Blizzard did tease a design where skills evolve as they rank up, an ice attack that slows, then freezes, then explodes, in a nod to Diablo 2. Whether that evolution feels like progression or just more busywork is the question nobody can answer until the build is playable. The safe read is that more details drop closer to launch, and the class lands somewhere in the first half of next year.
