Zenless Zone Zero: The Combat Tricks You've Been Ignoring
I've watched a lot of people hit a wall in the higher floors of Zenless Zone Zero, with a roster that's clearly strong enough, yet their damage just won't climb. It usually isn't the characters. It's a handful of combat mechanics that flash past in the tutorial and never get explained again. I only figured these out the hard way, getting beaten down by tough bosses over and over, so let me pull out the few most people miss.

Dodge Counters Are How You Build Daze Fast
Most players treat dodge as a pure survival button and tap it the moment they see an attack coming, when really the counter you land after a perfect dodge is one of the fastest ways to fill the Daze bar.
- A perfect dodge has to be triggered right before impact. It activates slow-motion, and the follow-up attack becomes a dodge counter with a much higher multiplier than your normal hits.
- Dodge toward or through the enemy, not away, otherwise your counter whiffs and the whole dodge was wasted.
- Don't burn dodge on every small enemy swing. Reposition with normal movement and save your perfect dodge for the boss's red-flash heavy attacks.
I used to mash dodge constantly, then got caught with no dodges left exactly when the boss dropped its big attack, and ate the hit face-first. Once I learned to sidestep small damage and save the perfect dodge for what matters, my clear times basically halved.
Switching Agents Gives You Invincibility Frames
I'd bet half the veteran players don't know this one: the instant you switch to a support agent, that character has invincibility frames, and it can eat a boss's full-screen nuke without spending a dodge or a healing item.
- When a boss winds up a full-screen attack, switch to your support agent — the swap's invincibility frames absorb the hit outright.
- When a combo has you pinned down, switching also resets your position and lets you slip away.
I stumbled onto this fighting a boss with a brutal full-screen AoE. My dodge couldn't cover it, I panic-switched characters, and somehow the whole thing just whiffed through me. After that, switching became my second dodge.
Stacking Attack Over Daze Is Why You Stall
I've seen too many people stack nothing but attack and run three damage dealers, then wonder why elites and bosses won't die. What you should be stacking is Impact, the stat that fills the Daze bar — break the enemy first, then unload.
- Don't just pile on attack. Impact is the stat that fills the Daze bar, and investing in it breaks enemies far faster than stacking raw attack ever will.
- Bring a Stun agent matching the enemy's weakness specifically to fill the Daze bar, instead of grinding away with three carries.
- Parry yellow-flash attacks with a defensive assist rather than dodging — the parry counters back and builds Daze. Save your dodge for the unparryable red flashes.
After I swapped one of my damage dealers for a Stun agent, elites that took five minutes to grind down were dying in a single Stun-window burst. Daze is the piece of ZZZ's damage loop you should learn first.

Don't Hoard Ultimates, and Don't Waste Assists
This game's Decibel meter stops building once it's full, so holding a ready ultimate is pure waste, but assist points never come back on their own, so the two demand completely opposite habits.
- Spend ultimates early and often. Once your Decibel meter is full, whatever you'd keep earning just goes to waste, so sitting on a ready ultimate bleeds damage.
- Save your ultimate for when the Stun window is about to end. Fill it with basics and skills first, then let the ultimate eat every damage buff you've stacked.
- Don't throw your parry at every swing. Each Defensive Assist costs an Assist Point, and those don't regenerate on their own — you only earn them back through Chain Attacks and Ultimates, so save them for the attacks you can't dodge.
On hard fights my whole mindset flipped: enter Stun, lay down the small skills, and only drop the ultimate on the last tick of the window, and my damage doubled. Once I stopped spending parries on every little swing, I actually had one ready when the boss's heavy hit came.
None of these are hard once someone points them out — the problem is nobody does. Dodge to counter, switch for the invincibility frames, build Daze instead of stacking pure attack, and stop hoarding your ultimates. Get those four into your hands and you'll clear stages that used to wall you, without touching your character's level at all. The real barrier in Zenless Zone Zero isn't how strong your agents are, it's whether you know how to use the free damage the mechanics hand you.
