What Are the Pity Rules in Zenless Zone Zero?

In Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ), the gacha system is not based purely on random chance. Instead, it uses a combination of probability and a structured “pity system” to ensure long-term fairness. The goal of this design is to give players a clear expectation of when high-rarity rewards will appear, rather than relying entirely on luck. Most players are not just interested in drop rates, but in questions like: how many pulls guarantee an S-rank character, whether featured characters are guaranteed, and how to manage resources efficiently. All of these are explained through the pity system.

Character Banner Pity: Guaranteed S-Rank at 90 Pulls

This section defines the baseline guarantee for all pulls.

The limited character banner in ZZZ uses a hard pity system combined with a soft pity increase mechanic.

l An S-rank character is guaranteed every 90 pulls (hard pity)

l Soft pity begins around 75 pulls

l Base S-rank drop rate is approximately 0.6%

l Every pull contributes to the pity counter

In practice, most S-rank characters appear between 75 and 85 pulls rather than reaching the full 90.

50/50 System: Determining the Featured Character

Once you obtain an S-rank, the real deciding factor begins.

This system determines whether you get the featured (rate-up) character or a standard one.

l 50% chance to obtain the featured S-rank character

l 50% chance to get a standard S-rank character

l If you lose the 50/50, the next S-rank is guaranteed featured

l This triggers the “guarantee state” system

In simple terms: the first S-rank is luck-based, the second is guaranteed.

Guaranteed Pity (Guarantee State): Protection After a Loss

When you lose the 50/50, the system activates a guarantee state.

This is one of the most important safety mechanisms in the game.

l The next S-rank is guaranteed to be the featured character

l The state persists across version updates

l It only resets after obtaining the featured character

l It can carry over between banners

Even with bad luck, the system ensures you will not miss the featured character indefinitely.

Pity Carryover: Resources Are Not Wasted

This is a key system for long-term planning, but often overlooked.

Pity progress carries over between banners of the same type.

l Pity counters are shared across limited character banners

l Unused pity progress transfers to the next banner

l The counter resets only after an S-rank is pulled

l The guarantee state also carries over

For example, if you pulled 60 times without an S-rank in one banner, those 60 pulls will still count in the next one.

Other Banner Types: Different Pity Rules

ZZZ also includes other gacha systems beyond character banners.

These have different pity structures and should not be confused.

l W-Engine banner: 80-pull hard pity

l Bangboo banner: 80-pull system

l Standard banner: independent pity rules

l Each banner type has separate counters

This means you should always check the banner type before planning your pulls.

The pity system in Zenless Zone Zero is designed as a balance between randomness and guaranteed outcomes. The 90-pull hard pity ensures a minimum reward, the soft pity increases efficiency, and the 50/50 plus guarantee system determines whether you obtain the featured character. Combined with carryover mechanics, the system makes gacha results more predictable over time while still retaining randomness. Understanding these rules helps players manage resources more efficiently. For more character guides and pull strategy breakdowns, you can visit MMOM for updated insights and gameplay analysis.
