Path Of Exile 2 Currency: A Simple Guide for New Players

What Is Currency in Path of Exile 2?

In most games, currency means gold or coins. But Path Of Exile 2 Currency works very differently. There is no gold at all. Instead, you collect many different types of orbs, scrolls, and other items. Each one has a real use – you can spend them to improve your gear or change your items’ stats. And because each currency item is useful, players trade them with each other like money.

Think of it this way: a gold coin in other games just sits in your bag. But a Chaos Orb in Path of Exile 2 can re-roll the stats on a piece of equipment. That makes it always wanted. So the whole economy runs on these functional items.

Why This Currency System Matters

This system can feel strange at first. But it has a big plus: every currency item you find while fighting monsters has value. You will never pick up something totally worthless. Even a lowly Scroll of Wisdom (which identifies magic items) can be traded in bulk.

The hardest part for new players is learning the value of each orb. Some are common and cheap. Others are very rare and can buy you end-game gear. Understanding Path Of Exile 2 Currency early will save you from making bad trades. You don’t want to spend a rare orb on a small upgrade that you could have bought with common orbs.

The Most Common Currency Items and What They Do

Here are the items you will see most often. Their names stay in the game language – we don't change them.

Scroll of Wisdom – Identifies an item’s hidden stats. You need many of these. Very cheap.

Portal Scroll – Opens a portal back to town. Also cheap and common.

Orb of Transmutation – Turns a normal (white) item into a magic (blue) item with one bonus stat.

Orb of Augmentation – Adds a second bonus stat to a magic item. Used together with Transmutation.

Orb of Alteration – Re-rolls the bonus stats on a magic item. Very useful for beginners trying to get good early gear.

Chaos Orb – This is the main trading currency. It re-rolls all stats on a rare (yellow) item. Players use Chaos Orbs like dollars in player-to-player trades.

Divine Orb – Re-rolls the numbers on a rare item’s stats. For example, if a ring says “+20 to 30 cold damage”, a Divine Orb can change that number within the range. Very valuable.

Exalted Orb – Adds a brand new stat to a rare item. Extremely rare and expensive. The most valuable common orb.

Mirror of Kalandra – The rarest currency in the game. It creates an exact copy of any non-unique item. Only a tiny number of players ever find one.

How to Get Path Of Exile 2 Currency

You don’t buy it with real money from the game store. Instead, you earn everything by playing.

Kill monsters and open chests – Most currency orbs drop from enemies. The higher the area level, the better the drops.

Complete quests – Some story quests give you free orbs. Do not skip them.

Sell items to vendors – Vendors will give you currency shards if you sell them a full set of rare gear (one helmet, body armour, gloves, boots, belt, two rings, and an amulet – all item level 60 or higher). Combine 20 shards to make one full orb.

Trade with other players – Use the official trade website or in-game trade chat. You can exchange common orbs for rarer ones, or sell good gear for Chaos Orbs.

Use the crafting bench – Later in the game, you can break down unwanted currency into smaller pieces. But that’s an advanced trick.

A beginner tip: always pick up every currency item that drops. Even Scrolls of Wisdom add up. When you have hundreds, you can trade them for better orbs.

Tips for Spending Your Currency Wisely

Do not waste rare orbs on low-level gear. A level 10 sword is not worth an Exalted Orb. Save your expensive Path Of Exile 2 Currency for end-game equipment (level 65+).

Use Chaos Orbs for trading – If you need a specific ring or bow, it is often cheaper to buy it from another player using Chaos Orbs than to craft it yourself.

Use Alteration Orbs for early crafting – When you are below level 50, use cheap orbs like Alteration and Augmentation to make decent magic items. Keep your Exalted Orbs safe.

Never use a Mirror of Kalandra unless you are 100% sure – Most players never find one. If you do, trade it for dozens of Exalted Orbs and then buy a full end-game build.

A common mistake: new players find a Divine Orb and use it on a random piece of gear. That is like burning a $100 bill to light a candle. Instead, trade the Divine Orb for many Chaos Orbs, then buy what you need.

How to Trade Safely with Other Players

Trading is a big part of Path Of Exile 2 Currency. Follow these rules to avoid getting cheated.

Use the official trade website – It shows real-time prices from thousands of players. Never guess the value of an orb.

Check the price of your item – Search for the same orb or gear piece. Look at what others are asking for it. Then price yours a little lower for a fast sale.

Meet in a town – Always trade in a safe area like Act 1 town. Do not drop items on the ground. Use the trade window.

Double-check before clicking accept – Some scammers swap a Chaos Orb for a much cheaper Orb of Alteration at the last second. Look carefully at each item in the window.

If a deal sounds too good to be true, it is a trick. For example, someone offering a Mirror of Kalandra for 10 Chaos Orbs – that is impossible. Do not fall for it.

Final Summary: Start Small, Learn Fast

You do not need to understand every currency item on day one. Start by learning Chaos Orbs (the main trading coin) and Exalted Orbs (the big money). Pick up everything. Sell full rare gear sets to vendors. Save your expensive orbs for high-level gear.

The beauty of Path Of Exile 2 Currency is that everything you find has a job. A Scroll of Wisdom identifies loot. A Chaos Orb fixes bad stats. An Exalted Orb adds power. Once you get comfortable, trading becomes fun – like running your own shop in a fantasy world.

Remember: every top player once felt confused by orbs and scrolls. Take it one step at a time. And when in doubt, keep your orbs in your stash. You can always trade them later when you know their true worth.
