FC 26 New Season Update Content Explained

Aug 14, 2026
Share: WhatsAppReddit

The summer season update for FC 26 landed at the end of May, and it's one of the biggest content drops EA has pushed for the game since launch. I've spent the last couple of weeks digging through the patch notes and playing through the new stuff, and there's a lot to unpack — some of it changes how the game actually plays, not just what's in the menus.

If you skipped the patch notes (fair enough, they're long), here's what actually matters.

A 48-Team World Cup Mode Arrives

The centerpiece of this update is The World's Game, EA's international football push ahead of the summer tournament. The headline feature is a new 48-team tournament mode that mirrors the real World Cup format — 12 groups, with the top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams advancing to a Round of 32, then knockout rounds to the final.

One thing worth being clear about up front: this is an unofficial mode. EA no longer holds the FIFA license, so there's no World Cup trophy, no official branding, and no official match ball in the game. It's called "The World's Game" rather than "The World Cup" for exactly that reason. The mode itself is still the real deal, just without the FIFA trimmings.

The playable nation list is substantial:

The licensing isn't complete across the board, though, and it's worth knowing before you pick your nation. Egypt and Japan have authentic players but unlicensed kits and crests. Algeria, Curaçao, Iran, Iraq, and Jordan are generic squads with fictional players. Bosnia and Herzegovina and DR Congo launched with generic kits, with authentic versions promised later. So while this is the closest thing FC 26 has to a real World Cup, a handful of teams are still placeholders rather than the real thing.

The tournament mode went live on June 4, and it slots into Ultimate Team and Kick-Off with a dedicated Tournament Tree widget so you can track your path through the bracket. If you've ever wanted to take an underdog nation on a run, this is the cleanest version of that fantasy EA has built yet — assuming your chosen nation is one of the fully licensed ones.

There's also a pair of new gameplay presets worth knowing about. Competitive is tuned for Ultimate Team and Clubs — faster passing, smarter keeper rebounds, more direct control. Authentic is aimed at Career Mode players who want something closer to real football, with positionally responsible defenders and lifelike goalmouth scrambles. You pick the feel you want instead of everyone sharing one baseline.

Team Press Took a Beating

The gameplay changes are where most of the actual season-to-season difference shows up, and the biggest one is the Team Press nerf.

Team Press had been a crutch for a lot of players — hold it down, and your AI teammates swarm the ball carrier automatically. That's been dialed back hard. EA reduced the pressure and marking tightness when Team Press activates in your defensive half, and the AI no longer double-teams if you're already manually marking the ball carrier. The result is more tactical spacing and fewer moments where you feel like you're playing against five players at once. If your entire defensive plan was "press and pray," you'll need to learn actual manual defending now.

Two other defensive changes are flying under the radar:

Put together, these changes reward players who defend with positioning and patience rather than relying on the game to do it for them. That's a welcome shift, honestly.

A Free Pelé and a Festival of Football

Ultimate Team got the biggest share of new content, and it's anchored by the Festival of Football event that started June 5.

The free stuff alone is worth logging in for. Anyone who signs in between June 5 and July 24 gets a 93 OVR ICON Pelé, plus three "Choose Your Journey" Evolutions. A free Pelé was the kind of thing that would've cost real money a few years ago, so this is a genuine generosity moment from EA.

The event runs five themed campaigns through late July — Path To Glory, Greats of the Game, Glory Hunters, Phenoms, and Summer Stars — with 100+ new international players and two new ICONs, Rivellino and Mario Kempes, joining the pool.

There's also a new Tokens reward system that lets you earn up to 1,000 tokens per week (5,000 total) toward rewards, and a limited-time Penalty Shootouts mode that went live June 28 in FUT and Kick-Off.

The feature that's gotten the most attention from the community is the PlayStyles Lab. It replaces the old Birthday Bakery system and lets you manually pick base PlayStyles and PlayStyles+ for eligible promo cards. Most eligible cards now drop "blank" with zero PlayStyles, and you build them up through two free, unlimited-use Evolutions — one for PlayStyles+ (up to 3) and one for base PlayStyles (up to 8). One thing to watch: if you customize a card and want to sell it on the transfer market, you need to use the new Evo Undo feature to restore its tradable status first.

Passing, Shooting, and Dribbling All Got Touched

A lot of the small gameplay changes from the spring patches are still shaping how the game feels right now, and they're worth a quick rundown because they affect every match.

Passing got a meaningful rebalance. Ground passes are now more accurate and travel faster, while lofted passes took an accuracy hit. There's also a new wrinkle where players with high Short Pass, Long Pass, and Curve can now curve through balls even without the Incisive Pass PlayStyle — which slightly narrows the gap between PlayStyle haves and have-nots. The Tiki Taka PlayStyle, meanwhile, had its ground and first-time pass accuracy reduced, so spamming rapid one-twos isn't quite as free as it was.

Shooting changed too. Power Shots got a trajectory and accuracy buff, especially for players with the Power Shot PlayStyle or PlayStyle+. Chip shots are now less likely to drift wide and more accurate overall, with an extra boost for the Chip Shot PlayStyle. On the flip side, acrobatic shots — bicycle kicks and the like — took another accuracy nerf right after flicks, which should cut down on the circus goals.

A handful of skill moves got a 5% speed increase: Fake Shot, Heel Chop, and Feint and Exit. It doesn't sound like much, but that small speed bump makes them viable in situations where they previously felt too slow to use safely.

Career Mode and Clubs Got Real Attention

For a while it felt like Career Mode was an afterthought, but this season's updates put actual meat back into it.

Manager Career now integrates international tournaments properly, with national teams selectable at the start of a save and end-of-season Live Starting Points. There are also new Manager Live Challenges and national team objectives to chase. Earlier in the year, v1.4.0 split Player Status into separate Contract and General fields, tied archetype eligibility to Origin Stories, and replaced the old Skill Level with an Initial AP system — small changes that add up to a deeper management layer.

The ICON roster for Career Mode grew too. Season 6 added Ronaldinho, Gareth Bale, Fernando Torres, and Aya Miyama as playable legends, and the Festival of Football brought more ICONs and Heroes into Career.

Clubs got the biggest raw numbers bump. The level cap jumped from 90 to 95, PlayStyle slots went from 8 to 9, and Signature PlayStyles from 3 to 4. A fourth Signature PlayStyle unlocks at level 95 and can be upgraded to PlayStyle+. There's also a new batch of Signature PlayStyles — Rapid, Technical, Trickster, Tiki Taka, Incisive, Anticipate, Acrobatic, Press Proven, Quick Step, Finisher, Creator, and Intercept — and expanded archetype attribute caps that let some builds push toward 99 in stats like Ball Control, Balance, and Vision.

It's rare for a mid-cycle update to touch this many systems at once. Whether you're grinding FUT, rebuilding a national team in Career, or leveling a Pro in Clubs, there's something in this patch that actually changes how you play rather than just adding another card to chase.
