What Defense Strategies Does Monopoly GO Have?
Defense in Monopoly GO comes down to handling opponents' Shutdown attacks. When an opponent lands on a railroad tile, they can launch the Shutdown minigame and destroy landmarks on your board, and a damaged landmark lowers your earnings and costs cash to repair. The most critical active defense is the shield: each shield automatically blocks one attack, and once blocked, your landmark stays untouched. Use the shield mechanic properly and most Shutdown attacks get stopped before they ever reach your landmarks. This guide covers how to use shields, how to recover after being hit, and how to get attacked less in the first place.

Shields Are the Key Line of Defense
Master the three shield mechanics and you're halfway to a solid defense.
- Three shields by default: You can hold up to three shields by default, and some players reach five after reaching a certain level or version update. Each blocked attack consumes one shield, and once they're gone, your landmarks start taking hits.
- Blocked attacks pay attackers less: Attackers only get a low score when hitting a shielded player, and a high score only when they break through to the landmark.
- Full inventory converts to dice: Once your shields are full, any shield you collect after that is converted directly into dice rolls, turning defensive overflow into more rolls.
Shields are the backbone of defense, so keep the inventory full whenever you can.
How to Recover After Being Hit
Shields eventually run out, and how you handle a damaged landmark decides whether the loss stops there.
- Repair landmarks on the same turn: A destroyed landmark smokes, earns less, and gets pursued by opponents, so repair it on the same turn.
- Repair and replenish together: After repairing, check how many shields you have left and refill if you're below three, leaving opponents no opening for back-to-back attacks.
- Repair the highest-rent landmark first: When several landmarks are damaged at once, fix the highest-earning one first to keep the income loss minimal.
Once the gap is closed, the losses finally stop.

Lowering the Odds of Being Targeted
Defense isn't just recovering after a hit; make yourself a hard target in the first place and you'll get hit far less.
- Don't drop below three shields: Below three shields you become a visible target in Shutdown events, so keep the inventory full.
- Pay extra attention during activity spikes: Attacks are heaviest around big events, tournament settlements, and leaderboard resets, so keep shields full during those windows.
- Build and upgrade landmarks early: The faster and more completely you build your board, the fewer gaps opponents can hit, cutting the chance of being attacked at the source.
With defense done in advance, most attacks never land in the first place.
Defense Costs Very Little
Defense here costs very little. Shields come from many places and are easy to pick up along the way: landing on a shield-icon tile, doing daily Quick Wins, opening event rewards, and collecting sticker albums all refill your stock. In other words, the defense line isn't built by burning extra resources; it fills up naturally as you play. Make topping up shields a fixed action each time you log in, and the cost is low enough to ignore while the payoff is a defense line that stays full.
Defense in Monopoly GO is, at its core, a cycle of shields. Shields block Shutdown attacks and cut the attacker's score, making them the most stable defensive asset in the game and one of the few ways to leave an opponent's attack with nothing. The point of defense isn't repairing after the fact, it's closing the gap beforehand: top up your shields on login, repair landmarks as soon as they're hit, and refill shields right after, and the frequency of hits drops noticeably. The repair cash you save stays in hand and becomes the capital for more dice rolls and building upgrades, which is the most practical value defense provides.
