Best FC 26 Formations
I used to swap formations every time I hit a losing streak, convinced the shape was the problem. It rarely was. What actually helped was picking two shapes and learning how the roles inside them move, then sticking with them long enough to stop thinking about my own players and start reading the opponent.
The five below are what's working right now. The role setups use the FC IQ system, so the old FIFA instructions are gone. You assign a role and a focus, and the player's movement follows from that.

4-2-3-1 (Wide)
This is where most people land, and there's a reason. The two defensive midfielders clean up a lot of mistakes before they become chances.
Set one CDM to Holding with a Defend focus, and the other to Deep-Lying Playmaker or Box-to-Box, so you have someone who can turn and play forward. The CAM works best as a Playmaker, and the striker as an Advanced Forward staying on the last man.
What goes wrong here is the lone striker. When the CAM and both wide players bomb forward without checking where he is, you end up with loads of possession and one guy isolated against two center-backs. I fixed this by keeping one wide player holding the width instead of letting both cut inside.
4-4-2
The 4-4-2 still works because two banks of four are hard to play through. It's the one I'd hand to someone who doesn't want to overthink.
Up top, pair an Advanced Forward with a False 9 or Target Forward. One runs in behind while the other drops to link, instead of both standing on the same shoulder. In midfield, one Holding and one Box-to-Box, because with only two of them, one has to stay disciplined or the middle opens up.
The known weakness is a three-man midfield with a CAM. You get outnumbered in the middle, so either the wide midfielders track back or the second striker drops in when you lose the ball.

4-3-3
If you like playing down the wings, this is the one. The single CDM behind two midfielders gives you a base to recycle the ball.
Run the CDM as Holding with a Defend focus, since he's your only real screen. The wingers can go Inside Forward if you want them cutting in on their strong foot, or stay as Wingers to keep the width. Striker as Advanced Forward or Poacher, depending on how much build-up you play.
The tradeoff is out wide in defense. When the wingers don't track back, your fullbacks get doubled up, and a patient opponent keeps hitting the space behind them until you lose your shape.
4-5-1
This is the one I switch to when I'm protecting a one-goal lead against someone clearly better than me.
There's a misunderstanding worth clearing up first. The 4-5-1 does not turn into a 4-1-4-1 on its own when you defend. A flat 4-5-1 stays a flat 4-5-1 unless you actually set one midfielder to Holding and drop him between the lines. If you want that extra shield in front of the back four, you build it with the role instead of assuming it just happens.
With the wide midfielders tracking back and one Holding midfielder sitting deep, the middle clogs up and the opponent has to go around you. The lone striker stays up top as an Advanced Forward, ready for the counter rather than chasing the ball.
5-2-1-2
Five at the back gets a bad reputation, and I get why. It looks defensive, and you'll get called ratty when you win with it. But against the 4-3-2-1 that everyone is running right now, it genuinely works.
The three center-backs and two central midfielders pack the middle and force the opponent wide, where they have to cross against numbers. Your wingbacks are your entire width here, so set them as Attacking Wingbacks and accept they'll run themselves out around the 70th minute. Keep one CM as Holding and let the other push up behind the two strikers, one Advanced Forward and one dropping.
It's a counter shape more than a control shape. If you can't win the ball cleanly and spring the front two, you'll spend the whole match defending your own box.
Honestly, formation advice comes down to picking a balanced shape you can play in your sleep, plus one switch for when things go wrong. Learn the roles in both and stop chasing whatever the latest video claims is broken.
