Diablo 4 Masterworking Guide

Masterworking is the endgame upgrade system that turns a good piece of gear into a finished one. It arrived with Season 4, and the Vessel of Hatred expansion rebuilt parts of it in 2.0, so a lot of the old advice still floating around is now wrong. Here is how it works in the current game, what it costs, and where people leak the most gold doing it wrong.

What Masterworking Does

The short version is that masterworking raises the affixes on an item, and at three specific points it spikes one affix far above the rest.

Those three spike ranks are where the value lives. By rank 12, an item has grown every affix a steady amount and carries three 25% bonuses scattered on top. If they all land on one affix, you have a monster piece, the kind of roll people screenshot. If they scatter across the junk, you reset and go again, which is where most of the cost hides.

Ancestral Gear Is the Gate

Masterworking is not for everything that drops. The 2.0 update redefined Ancestral to mean an item with at least one Greater Affix, and those are the pieces worth investing in. If the item does not have a Greater Affix, it is not the thing you are masterworking to 12.

Tempering comes first. It is the blacksmith service that adds extra affixes using Temper Manuals, which permanently unlock recipes in your Codex of Power across categories like Offensive, Defensive, and Utility. Ancestral Legendaries can carry two tempered affixes, and those affixes also scale up when you masterwork, so the order matters. Temper first, then masterwork. Tempering also has a limited number of rerolls, so you can lock yourself into a bad affix if you are careless.

Ancestral Uniques skip the tempering step entirely, since Uniques cannot be tempered, which makes them the simplest things to masterwork.

Obducite Is the Only Material

The material situation got much simpler in 2.0. Before Vessel of Hatred, you juggled three tiers of material and transmuted between them. Now there is exactly one.

On top of Obducite, every rank also asks for gold and standard crafting materials, and the amount climbs with each step. Rank 12 is not cheap, which is why the farming loop below matters.

Where Obducite Comes From

This is the part most old guides get wrong. The Pit used to be the place to farm it, but in 2.0 it is no longer the main source, and a clear hands you far less Obducite than a good Nightmare Dungeon run. The Pit is now about unlocking Torment tiers and leveling glyphs.

Obducite only starts dropping at level 60, and higher Torment tiers increase the amount, so you are meant to farm it in the deep endgame rather than early on.

The Reset Trap

Resetting is how you reroll the bad 25% spikes, and it is the single biggest gold sink in the game.

A reset costs around five million gold, and it does not refund the Obducite you already spent either. It also sends the item straight back to rank 0, so you have to feed it every material from rank 1 all over again. That combination of gold and materials is what makes chasing a perfect roll so punishing. I have seen people spend an evening trying for a single lucky rank and come out missing tens of millions with nothing to show for it.

The boring advice is the correct advice: level all your gear to rank 4 first, then everything to 8, then 12. Save resets for the one or two pieces that actually matter to your build. Resetting a full set at rank 12 is how you go broke, and it is almost never worth it outside the highest tiers of play.

The short version: masterwork Ancestral gear with Greater Affixes, temper it first, feed it Obducite from Nightmare Dungeons and Infernal Hordes, and be stingy with resets. That is the whole system.
