Diablo 4 Boss Farming Guide

Boss farming in Diablo 4 works differently than it did a few seasons ago. Blizzard reworked the whole system, and if you are still running the old four person rotation in your head, you are going to waste materials. Here is how the current system works, which bosses matter, and how to get the most out of every key you farm.

How Boss Farming Works Now

The big change is that bosses no longer cost materials to summon. You can walk up and fight any of them once you are on Torment I or higher. What costs resources now is the loot, not the fight.

When a boss dies, it drops very little on the ground. Instead, a personal loot chest called a Hoard spawns, and you spend a Lair Key to open your own. Every player pays for their own chest. There is no more joining a group, letting someone else summon, and grabbing loot for free.

Blizzard made this change on purpose. The old rotation system let players leech, so now each person carries their own keys and opens their own Hoard. It is a cleaner system once you get used to it, and it means a key never feels wasted on a boss you are only testing.

The Three Boss Tiers

Bosses are now sorted into three tiers, and the tier tells you roughly what the boss is for.

That tiering is the fastest way to know where to spend your keys. If your build needs a specific Unique, you farm the initiate boss that holds it. If you are chasing Mythics, you push your materials toward the Greater and Exalted bosses.

Lair Keys and Where They Come From

Each boss takes one specific key, and every key has a home activity. That pairing is the whole farming loop.

The Greater and Exalted bosses use their own keys too. Duriel takes a Shard of Agony, Andariel a Pincushioned Doll, and Belial a Betrayer's Husk. These higher keys mostly drop from the initiate bosses, and there is a shortcut: initiate bosses can also drop Stygian Stones, which you convert at the Alchemist into any Greater key you want.

What Each Tier Is Worth Farming

The reason to target a boss is still the loot pool, but the Mythic picture changed.

Every boss in the game can drop a Mythic Unique now. The difference is the rate. Initiate bosses drop them the least, Greater bosses about twice as often, and Belial the most. So you are never fully wasting a key on an initiate boss, even when it feels like you are only farming class Uniques.

The practical rule has not changed much. Farm the initiate boss that holds the Unique your build is missing, bank the Greater keys you pick up along the way, then spend them on Duriel, Andariel, and Harbinger for the Mythic chase. And keep an eye out for Belial, because his Hoard is where the best odds live.

Grouping Still Helps, Just Differently

Grouping is not dead, but it no longer multiplies your loot for free.

Each player still opens their own Hoard with their own key, so nobody rides along on someone else's materials. What the game gives you in return is a bonus: for every extra party member, a boss gains roughly a one in three chance to drop an extra Unique from its pool. So running with a full group still pays, it just pays through extra drops rather than free carries.

The short version: farm the four core keys from their activities, spend them on the initiate bosses for Uniques, and convert the higher keys into Duriel, Andariel, Harbinger, and Belial runs for Mythics. Everyone pays their own way now, but the loop still works.
