ZZZ: How to Pull Off a Dodge Counter?
A lot of people in Zenless Zone Zero can't pull off a Dodge Counter, and it's usually not bad reflexes, it's that the dodge timing was never right. The counter isn't a separate button in this game. You have to land a Perfect Dodge first, and when you do, you get a blue flash and time slows down, and that's when you hit the attack button. I used to mash it too, but once I got the trigger conditions straight, my success rate jumped from three in ten to nine. Here's the whole thing from beginner to advanced, including how to train it and squeeze the most damage and Daze out of it.

Get the Perfect Dodge down first, or the counter never comes
A Dodge Counter always has to be preceded by a Perfect Dodge, and a lot of people stall out because they never actually triggered the Perfect Dodge and just assumed they pressed the counter too slow.
- The Perfect Dodge window is the instant before an enemy attack lands, and the gold or red flash above its head is only the wind-up cue. Don't panic-dodge the moment it appears, hit the dodge button right as the attack is about to strike you.
- The success signal is a blue flash around your agent and time briefly slowing into the Perfect Dodge slow-mo, see that and you pressed it right.
- Dodging early is just a normal dodge with no counter, and the simple test is this, no blue flash and no slow-mo means you dodged too soon.
The fastest way to train it is to head to VR Training, set the enemy invincible, and watch only for the flash until the rhythm becomes muscle memory.
The Dodge Counter is one motion, press attack right after the dodge
The window after a Perfect Dodge is tight, you have to hit the attack button almost immediately or the counter breaks, so treat the two buttons as a single motion.
- The input is dodge then immediately attack, right click then left click on keyboard, or A then X on controller by default, basically two buttons pressed almost together.
- A Dodge Counter counts as a Heavy Attack and shreds the Daze gauge much faster than normal attacks, and that Daze buildup is its real value.
- The counter has invulnerability frames the moment it comes out, so you can use it to eat some ground damage instead of standing there dodging.
Train "Perfect Dodge into Dodge Counter" as one unit, if you press them as two separate steps you'll always be a beat late. Once it's muscle memory, the counter comes out on its own.

To go further, learn double counters and chain dodging
Once the basic counter is solid, the advanced layer is packing more damage into one sequence, and the double counter plus chained Perfect Dodges are two paths that genuinely raise your output.
- The double counter only works on yellow-flash attacks, since a red-flash heavy can't be parried, so against red you can only Dodge Counter, never double.
- The sequence is dodge, attack, then switch to parry in extremely rapid succession. It leans on the first agent's lingering recovery frames, so dodge and attack slightly early, then switch fast, and if you're slow the incoming agent just does a normal switch.
- Against bosses with consecutive attacks, you can chain at most two Perfect Dodges, and there's a short cooldown after the second, so don't greed for a third.
The double counter is a nice extra, but get your basic counter success rate to nine in ten before you touch it, otherwise you'll whiff both.
A Dodge Counter really isn't about reflexes, it's about whether you watch the flash and dare to wait for the last moment before you dodge. Dodge early and you whiff, dodge right and the attack follow-up is a high-damage, Daze-shredding counter, and after enough reps it becomes instinct. Once Perfect Dodge and the counter are one motion, add the double counter on top and your clears will feel a whole tier faster. Don't rush it, go to the training room and grind the rhythm first, that's worth more than anything else.
