ZZZ Beginner's Guide: How to Start Playing from Scratch?
Right now is a great time to jump into Zenless Zone Zero. Version 3.1 landed on the second anniversary, so you log in to a free limited S-rank character selector, 1,600 Polychromes, and a pile of free pull tickets. But let me pour some cold water on that first: no matter how many rewards there are, if you don't know how to play, you'll still get stuck in Chapter 1. I've seen plenty of new accounts quit on day two, and it wasn't because the game was hard, it was because they burned stamina and pulls recklessly in the early game and wrecked their own progress. This guide skips the theory and just breaks down, in plain terms, what a total beginner should do in their first three days and how to plan stamina and pulling.

What to Do First: Push the Main Story to Level 5 to Unlock Rewards
The biggest trap for a new account is wandering around doing everything, when the only thing you should be doing in your first three days is pushing the main story to raise your Inter-Knot level.
- Reach Inter-Knot level 5 to unlock events and redeem codes. The anniversary S-rank selector and free pull tickets are all gated behind your Inter-Knot level, so the slower you push, the later you collect them.
- If you hit a wall, level your main three up to their current cap. Level advantage matters far more than mechanical skill, but the cap follows your Inter-Knot level, so if you can't go any higher, push the story first instead of grinding materials blindly.
- Don't rush into side quests and commissions. Your early stamina is limited and side content pays out far less than the main story, so there's no harm in coming back to clear it once the story hits a wall.
Are the Free Characters Enough?
A lot of new players stress over who to pull the moment they enter, but the free characters the game hands you are more than enough to clear the main story.
- Anby and Nicole already cover two key roles. Stun and Support are exactly what your main team is missing, so don't rush to replace them.
- Let Billy carry your early damage. Until you land a stronger main DPS, he's enough to push you all the way through.
How to Spend Your Stamina Without Wasting It
Stamina is the most valuable thing in this game, and spending it in the wrong place means a whole week of progress gone.
- Weeklies and Notorious Hunt come first. These are limited high-value stages that reset weekly, so every miss is a loss.
- Then invest in agent levels, W-Engines, and core skills. These three directly determine your strength, so feed them to your three main characters first.
- Leave Drive Discs for last. Farming Drive Discs early is pure stamina waste, so wait until your main team is built before revisiting them.

The Pulling Traps New Players Fall Into
Plan your pulls well and even a free-to-play account can feel great; plan them poorly and no amount of spending will save you.
- Figure out which role your team is missing, then use the selector to fill it. Don't pick a character from the selector that you might also pull on the limited banner, or you'll waste it on a duplicate.
- Chase only one limited character at a time. Your resources are limited, so don't want this one and that one at once, lock onto a single target and save up.
- Understand the pity before you pull. The newbie pool guarantees a standard S-rank at 50 pulls, and the limited banner has a 90-pull soft pity at 50% odds, with a hard guarantee at 180 pulls, so don't expect to get lucky on your first ten-pull.
- Never buy a starter account. Ban, account recovery, and theft risks are all right there, and the free characters are enough to play, so it's not worth the gamble.
At the end of the day, the beginner phase of Zenless Zone Zero comes down to three things: push the story, build three characters, and keep your hands off reckless pulling. The game is honestly pretty friendly to free-to-play and light spenders, and the free resources plus the anniversary rewards are enough to carry you smoothly through the first few dozen hours. Don't chase a perfect team or perfect Drive Discs from day one, that's how veterans play, and a beginner's job is simply to survive and build the account first. Once you've cleared the story and your characters are built, there's still plenty of time to come back and sweat the small stuff.
