How Much Cash Should You Save Before Upgrading Buildings in Monopoly GO?
Cash in Monopoly GO is a double-edged sword: hoard it and it can be drained by raids, spend it on landmarks, and a half-finished build can bite you. How much you save and when you spend it decides how efficiently your cash converts. Many players upgrade the moment they have money, only to watch a half-built landmark get destroyed and the money go to waste. Others save without calculating properly, then find themselves short when the discount window opens. The sensible approach is to first work out the total cost of your current board, then release it all in one go during the discount window.

How to Calculate How Much to Save
There is no fixed number, since it ties directly to your current board's landmark costs, but there is a formula you can plug in.
- First upgrade cost times 112: The price of the first level of the first landmark on a fresh board, multiplied by 112, is the rough total cost of the whole board. For a safety buffer, multiply by 115.
- Price by board, save by board: Each board's cost rises with your progress, so your savings target should follow the current board's cost rather than a number picked out of thin air.
- Short of the target, don't build: Don't start work until you've saved enough for the whole board. Stopping halfway earns no completion reward and leaves a half-finished build exposed to rivals.
Figure out what the board costs, save toward that number, and only then does efficiency enter the picture.
Why Save for a Whole Board
The goal isn't to upgrade a few landmarks, but to push through the entire board in one go. There are a few practical reasons behind this.
- Half-built is a target: A landmark stopped halfway is the easiest state for a Shutdown to destroy, and fixing it costs money all over again. That's double spending.
- Completion pays a full reward: Only when all five landmarks on a board are fully upgraded do you get the full dice and cash reward that fuels the next board. Half a board pays far less than a whole one.
- An empty board is safest: With nothing built, a Shutdown has nothing to target, keeping your shields and cash stable. Staying empty while saving is less hassle than building and saving at the same time.
Saving for a whole board is about avoiding the loss from giving up halfway, so every bit of cash lands where a full reward can be claimed.

When to Build
Once you've saved enough, you still need the right window. The same cash spent at different times saves very different amounts.
- Builder's Bash comes first: The build discount runs left to right across your landmarks, dropping from fifty percent on the first to forty percent on the second, down to ten percent on the fifth. Upgrading in bulk during the discount window saves a meaningful amount.
- Pair it with Wheel Boost: Upgrade landmarks cheaply during the discount, then let Wheel Boost activate right after. A few rolls double-spins every set you just completed, covering both building and rewards.
- Landmark Rush tops it up: Landmark Rush gives extra rewards per upgrade, worth the most on cheaper boards, and stacks with the discount window for an extra tier.
- Cash Boost: save first, spend later: Build up a pile during Cash Boost, then spend it in the build discount window, closing the full "save first, spend later" loop.
Builder's Bash lasts about an hour within an activation window of a few hours. Once the cash is saved, wait for this discount window to release it all.
How to Protect Your Cash
The hard part of saving isn't the math; it's holding on to it. Cash sitting in your account can be drained by a Bank Heist at any time, and the longer you save, the more exposed you are. The key to protecting cash is shortening exposure: start saving an hour or two before the discount window rather than hoarding a full day ahead. Keep the board empty while saving so Shutdowns have no half-built target to hit. Top up shields before logging off. If you're still far from the whole-board target, put the cash somewhere it pays off immediately rather than sitting on a large sum waiting for a window that hasn't been scheduled. The "upgrade a landmark" Quick Wins task can be cleared with a cheap repair, so you don't need to touch the main cash you're saving.
Saving cash to build comes down to a four-step routine: calculate right, save enough, time it correctly, and protect it well. Work out the whole-board target with first-upgrade cost times 112. Keep the board empty until you hit that amount. Release everything during the build discount window, and control heist risk with shields and short saving cycles along the way. Do all four, and the same cash buys nearly fifty percent more upgrades, which naturally speeds up how fast you clear a board.
