How to Choose Among Lost Ark's Four Martial Artist Subclasses?

Share: WhatsAppReddit

Lost Ark's Martial Artist class has four subclasses — Wardancer, Scrapper, Glaivier, and Soulfist. At first glance they all look like melee fighters, but each operates on a completely different energy cycle, skill mechanic, and team role. Plenty of players freeze at the character creation screen because the class preview alone cannot convey how a subclass actually feels in combat or how its investment curve plays out. Making it trickier, most subclasses split into two distinct builds that can feel as different as entirely separate classes. Picking the wrong one will not ruin your account, but the cost of pulling a character from zero to legion-raid-ready is substantial. Getting the underlying mechanics straight before committing is far more useful than chasing a damage tier list.

How to Choose Among Lost Ark's Four Martial Artist Subclasses

Output Mechanics and Energy Cycles — The Real Dividing Line

Each subclass runs on a fundamentally different energy system. This is the deepest layer of gameplay logic that shapes how a class feels, and it is often why new players sense something is off after a few hours of play.

When the energy cycle clicks, everything downstream — rotations, positioning, gear priority — falls into place much faster. If the core mechanic does not match your natural playstyle, no amount of raw numbers will make the class feel right.

Skill Floor, Skill Ceiling, and Why Difficulty Rankings Are Less Useful Than Difficulty Fit

These four subclasses do not sit on the same difficulty scale, but harder does not mean better, and easier does not mean shallow. Knowing where each subclass actually challenges you matters more than staring at a difficulty tier list.

Difficulty and fun are not the same axis. Some players enjoy the rhythm of a fixed rotation; others thrive on the high-stakes timing of burst windows. Finding the subclass whose pressure points match your own is the real goal.

Team Role in Legion Raids — Utility Matters More Than the Damage Meter

Legion raids are not target dummies. A team needs more than raw damage numbers — stagger, destruction, and counter utility often carry more weight during progression than who tops the damage chart.

Whether your group clears a mechanic often matters more than who sits at the top of the damage meter. There is a reason high-utility classes are always in demand during progression.

Investment Cost — The Variable Everyone Forgets When Choosing a Subclass

The investment gap between the four subclasses is real. Wardancer and Scrapper sit on the more affordable end: their engraving setups are mature, gear is widely available, and auction house prices for their materials are stable — a smoother start for new players. Glaivier offers the best value-for-money in the Martial Artist family: damage is concentrated in a few red spear skills, meaning fewer high-level gems are needed compared to multi-skill classes. Engraving flexibility is another plus, as Pinnacle and Control share several key engraving books, making it cheaper to switch builds without starting from zero. Soulfist sits at the opposite extreme. Gear, engravings, gems, tripods — everything is mandatory, and the entry threshold is the highest of the four. Early damage is underwhelming and the return-on-investment curve is long, but once fully kitted out, Soulfist's burst damage ranks among the top tiers in the entire game. If you have the patience to raise one as a side project, the payoff is worth the wait. If you expect to walk into a legion raid a week after character creation and pump damage, Soulfist will almost certainly disappoint.

None of the four subclasses is objectively the strongest — only the best fit for your mechanical preferences and investment patience. Wardancer demands patience early but becomes an indispensable crit synergy slot once fully built. Scrapper's two builds both deliver top-tier stagger and destruction, with utility that stays relevant across all content. Glaivier combines a high damage floor with excellent gem efficiency, making it the standout choice for cost-conscious players. Soulfist is the textbook high-investment, high-return class, suited for players willing to grind out gear and master every boss pattern. Before committing, take each subclass into the training room and run through their basic skill cycles. Feel does not lie. Patches will shift numbers and meta rankings will change, but finding the class that does not feel like a chore to play is what keeps you logging in for the long run.
