How to Play Spiritborn in Diablo 4
Spiritborn is one of the most distinctive classes in Diablo 4. Introduced with the Vessel of Hatred expansion, Spiritborn combines fast movement, close-range combat, powerful spirit-based abilities, and flexible skill interactions. Its unique class system allows players to select Spirit Guardians and use them to shape the behavior of their entire build.
Unlike a simple damage-focused class, Spiritborn requires players to understand the relationship between the Spirit Hall, skill categories, resource generation, defensive mechanics, and equipment effects. Once these systems work together, Spiritborn can maintain strong mobility while dealing consistent damage in both regular farming and endgame content.

How to Choose Spirit Guardians for Spiritborn
The Spiritborn class features four Spirit Guardians: Jaguar, Gorilla, Eagle, and Centipede. Each Guardian provides a different combat identity, allowing players to build around fast attacks, defense, mobility, or sustained damage.
The four Spirit Guardians can be broadly understood as follows:
- Jaguar: Focuses on fast attacks, aggressive combat, and offensive pressure.
- Gorilla: Emphasizes defense, durability, and close-range combat.
- Eagle: Provides mobility and supports fast-moving combat styles.
- Centipede: Works well with sustained damage, crowd control, and recovery effects.
The key is not to use every Guardian equally. A strong Spiritborn build normally establishes a clear core around one primary Guardian and then uses the secondary Guardian to complement damage, survivability, mobility, or resource management.
Spirit Hall Is the Core of Spiritborn Build Design
The Spirit Hall is one of the most important systems for Spiritborn. Players can select a primary Spirit Guardian and later gain access to a secondary Guardian effect. The primary Guardian has a particularly important function: it gives all of the player's skills the selected Spirit Guardian's skill tag.
For example, when Jaguar is selected as the primary Spirit Guardian, all of the player's skills are treated as Jaguar skills for effects that specifically interact with the Jaguar tag. This can allow Legendary Aspects, Unique effects, passives, and other mechanics that benefit Jaguar skills to influence the entire skill setup.
This global skill-tag effect is much more important than simply adding another passive bonus. It changes how players evaluate skills and equipment because an effect designed for a particular Spirit Guardian can potentially interact with skills that originally belonged to different categories.
When setting up the Spirit Hall, players should check:
- Whether the primary Spirit Guardian matches the main build concept.
- Whether the secondary Guardian fills an important weakness.
- Whether the selected Guardian tag activates useful equipment effects.
- Whether the Spirit Hall configuration supports the complete skill rotation.
- Whether the selected Guardians fit the character's endgame goals.
Understanding this system makes it much easier to create a coherent Spiritborn build rather than simply combining individually powerful skills.
How to Build a Spiritborn Skill Setup
Spiritborn has several different skill categories, and understanding their roles is important when creating a build. Basic Skills and Core Skills should not be treated as the same type of ability.
Basic Skills such as Thunderspike, Rock Splitter, and Thrash are primarily used for resource generation, basic combat effects, and triggering related bonuses. They should not automatically be treated as the main damage source.
The true Core Skills include abilities such as Quill Volley, Rake, and Stinger. Depending on the build, one of these Core Skills can become the primary source of sustained damage.
A practical skill setup can therefore include:
- One primary Core Skill for sustained damage.
- One Basic Skill for resource generation or supporting effects.
- One mobility skill for repositioning.
- One defensive skill for survival.
- One utility or control skill for specific combat situations.
- One Ultimate or powerful cooldown ability for major encounters.
The exact combination depends on the build. Players should pay attention to the skill rotation rather than simply selecting abilities with the highest displayed damage.
For example, a Basic Skill can generate the resources needed to maintain a Core Skill rotation. A mobility ability can then reposition the character before the next attack sequence. Defensive skills should be reserved for dangerous mechanics rather than being used immediately whenever they become available.
This creates a more efficient combat cycle and allows Spiritborn to maintain both mobility and damage during difficult encounters.

Spiritborn Gear and Build Progression
Equipment becomes increasingly important as Spiritborn moves from leveling into endgame content. Players should not judge an item only by its highest individual stat. The most useful equipment usually supports the interaction between the main Core Skill, Spirit Guardian selection, resource management, and defensive requirements.
Important gear considerations include:
- Core Skill-related bonuses.
- Attack speed and skill execution efficiency.
- Critical Strike-related attributes.
- Resource generation and resource management.
- Maximum Life and defensive attributes.
- Legendary Aspects that support the selected Spirit Guardian.
- Unique items that significantly change the behavior of important skills.
A Unique item can sometimes change the way an entire build operates. When this happens, it may be more efficient to adjust the skill setup around the Unique effect rather than forcing the item into an existing build.
For endgame gear, players should also pay attention to Greater Affixes, Tempering, and Masterworking. A high-quality item should be evaluated before large amounts of crafting materials are invested into it. The base affixes and Greater Affixes should match the build, while the Tempering result should also be suitable before serious Masterworking investment begins.
A strong gear base with poor Tempering results may not be worth extensive further investment, while an item with the right affixes and successful Tempering can become an excellent long-term piece.
Spiritborn Endgame Gameplay and Combat Tips
Once Spiritborn reaches endgame content, the focus shifts toward difficult dungeons, boss encounters, and other high-level activities. At this stage, the quality of the complete build becomes more important than the strength of any single skill.
Players should focus on:
- Using mobility skills to maintain favorable positioning.
- Avoiding prolonged exposure to dangerous ground effects.
- Saving defensive abilities for major enemy mechanics.
- Maintaining a consistent resource cycle.
- Using burst abilities during appropriate damage windows.
- Adjusting defensive attributes when entering harder content.
- Changing skills or equipment when a specific encounter requires different tools.
Spiritborn's mobility is one of its major strengths. Instead of standing in one position and continuously attacking, players can use movement skills to reposition around enemies while maintaining their rotation.
Boss fights also require attention to mechanics. Damage alone is not enough to guarantee success in difficult content. Players need to recognize attack indicators, avoid dangerous areas, and use defensive abilities at the correct time.
The Spiritborn class has also received balance adjustments across the game's ongoing updates since its introduction. The safest way to evaluate its current strength is to consider the active season, current patch, build environment, and available equipment rather than relying on an old permanent tier list.
For new players, a simple Spiritborn build is usually easier to understand than a highly specialized endgame setup. Start with one clear Core Skill, select a compatible primary Spirit Guardian, establish a reliable resource cycle, and then improve equipment as stronger items become available.
The core Spiritborn concept can be summarized as follows: the Spirit Hall determines the build's fundamental Guardian identity, the primary Spirit Guardian applies its tag across your skills, the Core Skill provides the main damage engine, Basic Skills support resource generation and related effects, mobility controls positioning, and equipment strengthens the interaction between these systems.
Once these mechanics are understood, players can adapt their Spiritborn build much more easily when skills, Legendary Aspects, Unique items, or seasonal mechanics change.
