Black Desert Herbal Gunpowder Crafting Guide
Siege content is a combat feature with a specific use case in Black Desert, and Herbal Gunpowder—also called Vegetable Explosive Powder—is one of the more basic materials that go into siege equipment. It is used mainly for cannonballs, bombs, traps, flares, and other siege-related items, so adventurers who run node wars and sieges, and the players who handle guild supplies, have reason to learn how to make it. Herbal Gunpowder cannot be bought from an ordinary vendor, and it is not a routine drop from killing monsters; it has to be produced through Alchemy.

Recipe Materials
Herbal Gunpowder is made through Alchemy. Once your Alchemy reaches Skilled 10, you can craft it at an alchemy tool.
A single batch needs two materials:
- Insectivore Plant Powder ×1
- Powder of Darkness ×1
Both are base ingredients, and nothing else is added. The recipe is simple on paper, but the two materials come from different sources, and each one requires its own gathering, processing, and stockpiling.
How to Get Insectivore Plant Powder
Insectivore Plant Powder comes mainly from gathering and processing Insectivore Plants. Find Insectivore Plants in the wild and gather them, then process the plant material through Grinding in the Processing menu. It takes five pieces of Insectivore Plant material to make one Insectivore Plant Powder. There is one catch: grinding it has a Processing requirement, and your Processing needs to reach Artisan 1 first. So if you already have plenty of plant material but your Processing is still short, level it up before you start. Insectivore Plants are easy to find in the wild around Balenos and Serendia. Treat them as a normal gather while you are out anyway, rather than making a dedicated trip just for gunpowder.

How to Get Powder of Darkness
Powder of Darkness is the material that takes longer to build up. It is not made through Alchemy; it drops as a byproduct while you gather rocks and ore. When you gather ore, you have a chance to pick up Powder of Darkness along the way, and iron ore is one of the sources. To accumulate it steadily, send workers to production nodes—Northern Heidel Quarry, Hexe Stone Wall, and Olun's Valley all work, along with the caves and cliff areas near the coast. Because the drop is random, there is no way to farm it quickly in a short burst. Players who mine ore often, or who keep workers on node production, will simply stockpile it as part of their daily routine. The material cannot be traded personally, so anyone holding a reserve has to keep topping it up through their own gathering and production.
What Herbal Gunpowder Is Used For
Herbal Gunpowder goes almost entirely into siege equipment. Through the Siege Weapon Workshop, it turns into a range of items tied to node war and siege.
The common uses are:
- Cannonball—artillery ammunition for siege combat.
- Fire Shot—fire ammunition for siege weapons.
- Practice Cannonball—used mainly for training.
- Bomb, Flare, Poison Shot—for bombs, flares, and poison ammunition respectively.
Some trap-type siege supplies may also need Herbal Gunpowder. In practice, how much you need comes down to whether your guild regularly runs node wars, sieges, and other large-scale guild content.
Should You Stock It Up Ahead of Time
If your guild fights node wars or sieges often, keep a reserve ready. Insectivore Plant and Powder of Darkness in particular are worth accumulating during normal gathering and production, so you are not scrambling when you actually need siege supplies. Once your Alchemy hits Skilled 10, all you need to craft are Insectivore Plant Powder and Powder of Darkness. The former comes from grinding Insectivore Plant material and needs Artisan 1 Processing; the latter builds up as a byproduct of ore gathering. Whether you should make Herbal Gunpowder at all depends on the content you actually play. With no siege-equipment or guild-war needs, a small reserve is plenty; if you run node wars and sieges long-term, plan your material sources and build a steady stock through gathering, processing, and worker production.
